Course program
Introduction to Paleography: lexicon and basic notions. The fundamental stages of the history of handwriting in the Latin world. The dialectic between maiuscule/minuscule and between calligraphic hand/cursive hand. From a unified system to particularism to a newfound unity. Writings of scholars, merchants, notaries in the Middle Ages. The return to ancient models by the Humanists and modern handwritings.
Classroom work will help students become familiar with handwritten texts from various ages and origins, as well as the medieval abbreviation system. For those who wish to gain further training, a 20-hour Paleography Workshop (2 CFU in AAF1152- Other useful skills for inclusion in the world of work) has been set up to provide further reading practice under the guidance of the teacher. For all information, please consult the “News” section of the teacher profile.

Frequency
Non-attending students (or only partially attending) are strictly required to contact the teacher. Likewise, students who have taken Paleography exams in their previous degree program must contact the teacher.
Exam mode
The exam consists of an oral test and a practical test linked together, which contribute in equal parts to the evaluation.
The oral exam will consist in the exposure of one or more topics of Latin Paleography discussed in the classroom and/or in the course bibliography. The practical test will serve to demonstrate the student's ability to recognize and read, and also to localize, date, critically analyze (from the historical and cultural point of view) one or more examples of handwriting.
The practical test will be carried out on examples not previously illustrated in the classroom.
The assessment will take into account not only the knowledge and skills acquired, but also the autonomy in establishing links between the different topics, the critical and interpretative capacity manifested in the discussion, the mastery of scientific language; the assessment will also take into account the participation in teaching activities during the course. The level of mastery of all these elements will determine the vote.
