HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL ART

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of History of Medieval Art, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with insight into the culture and artistic production (painting, sculpture, architecture) of the Middle Age and a critical approach to art-historical issues of the period.

Course program
The Course aims to offer students advanced tools for the analysis of medieval architecture in Italy and in Europe (from the 7th to the 14th century), through a theme-based and chronological cut that enables students to know and to understand the material so as to develop personal abilities and skills of reading, interpretation, connection between monuments and historical-artistic events. Norman architecture: from the English Channel to southern Italy during the "Età della Contea" (1030-1130). The course focuses on Norman cathedrals as well as monastic seats (male and female) and the military architecture (castles and keeps) of southern Italy in the “Età della Contea” (1030-1130), always having as a reference the dialogue with Normandy and England, here after the Battle of Hastings and the conquest of William the Conqueror.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of medieval architecture history.
Frequency
Obligatory.
Exam mode
Oral exam. The assessment will take into account the learning skills acquired in class, on site inspections and during the study phase, as well as the communication skills and making judgements.
Lesson mode
The course consists of lectures and visits to museums and monuments.
