HEBRAIC LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE I

Course objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Hebrew Language and Literature, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with knowledge of Hebrew language aimed at the reading of texts, and notions of Hebrew literature.

Introduction to the biblical and contemporary Hebrew language. The alphabet; elements of morphology; rudiments of syntax. Reading and translation of selections of vocalized Jewish songs. Conversation exercises in standard Israeli Hebrew. What is Judaism. Characteristic aspects of Jewish culture. History of Jewish culture compared with other cultures. Notes on Jewish literature from antiquity to today.
