Portuguese and Brazilian Literature - Advanced Course

Course objectives

A) Acquisition of a solid work methodology (critical analysis of current bibliographies, ability to work directly on literary texts, case studies) in relation to most recent research directions. B) Knowledge of canonical and non-canonical stages of literary history, of the keygenres in a culture/tradition, of fundamental issues of the period(s) in exam.

Course program
From the desert to the rainforest. Brazilian geography through literature (and a little cinema) Different geographic and anthropic areas of Brazil will be examined through fiction and poetry (and a few movies) mainly from XIX and XX centuries: cities, rainforest, sertão, desert will be seen in a variety of approaches and styles of great authors.
Prerequisites
capability of contextualizing the texts in periods already studied in "triennale" courses (letteratura I e II, ie XIX and XX centuries)
Books
three entire novels/poetry works among (a selection) Amazon G Rangel, Inferno Verde M de Andrade, Macunaima A Callado, Quarup ... cities J de Alencar, Luciola (RJ XIX century) O de Andrade, Pau-brasil (SP XX century) J Almino, as cinco esrtações do amor (Brasilia XXI century) C Evaristo, Becos da memória (favela XXI century) G Martins, O sol na cabeça (RJ XXI century) ... Sertão E da Cunha, Os sertões JGuimarães Rosa, Grande sertão: veredas (or Corpo de baile) ... An anthology will be provided on Moodle
Frequency
Open access, without any formal inscription. Possibility of contacting the teacher for further explanations or additional bibliography, other than the general one.
Exam mode
Oral exam (20-25 min.), several dates starting from the end of the course. The aim is to check the students' knowledge of the authors and their texts from a cultural-historic, thematic-conceptual and formal point of view. A personal analysis will be especially appreciated, together with the capability of linking different authors/periods, thus resulting in a higher note than the average. Average marks will be given to those capable of expressing the content of the general textbooks. Outstanding marks will be given to the ones capable of a personal ability of linking different texts and authors.
