In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Classical Philology, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with the capacity to investigate a classical literary work from an historical, linguistic and critical point of view.

The student knows the fundamental principles of textual criticism and how to use the most important bibliography. The student is able to use those knowledge for the Italian literature in Latin and Italian. In particular, students are required to acquire: a deep knowledge of Latin language; a deep knowledge of Latin literature from III b.C. to VI a.D.; a good notion of the persistence of Latin language and civilization in Italian and European culture from the Middle Ages onwards; advanced skills in the research techniques required for the critical exam of Latin texts; competences and skills that are necessary for school teaching and up-to-date methodologies in teaching Latin; mastery of the specific research tools available in traditional or computerized and telematic form in the specific area of Latin texts.

Improvement in the field of theoretical-metalinguistic knowledge and skills in French linguistics, including areas such as applied linguistics, speech analysis, translatological studies, history of language, stylistics, intercultural studies.
Improvement of the written and oral French language skills aimed at reaching the C1 level.
Finally, by the end of the course students should be able to make links between the theoretical component and the practical analytical component relating to specific cases; they will also be able to develop their knowledge via the bibliography and case studies provided as a model and methodology throughout the course.

In particular, the course aims at providing students with a diachronic methodology in order to have a critical mind in analyzing bibliography concerning issues and problems of historical linguistics, with special reference to ancient Indo-European languages.

Acquire the ability to understand and explore theoretical and applied issues inherent in educational linguistics and language education, in bi-, pluri- and multilingualism. The course aims to provide students with an intermediate knowledge of the Hittite language.

Educational objectives

The course is intended to illustrate the history of handwriting in the Latin West, with a special focus on bookhands and chancery hands in Italy.

Through the lessons the student: will know the history, the fundamental concepts and the methodology of th discipline; will know the history of handwriting in Europe until the time of printing and will be able to read graphic phenomena in a cultural, technical and social sense. Through the practical exercises the student: will learn to identify, locate, date and read ancient and medieval handwriting up to the 16th century, placing each example in its historical context.

The course of geography teaching, addressing the main issues concerning the learning / teaching processes of geography, highlights the relationships between research and disciplinary teaching and identifies teaching methodologies and tools able to promote in students an appropriate use of vocabulary and categories interpretations of the discipline in order to be able to understand and contextualise the environmental and anthropological characteristics of the territory.

Course topics: geographic skills and the assumptions of the vertical geography curriculum; learning units; teaching practices; direct observation; indirect observation and the tools of geo-graphicity (iconic instruments, literary-linguistic tools, ludiform instruments); space and time; geotechnologies; values in geographic education.

Educational objectives

The main target of the course is to give students the opportunity to acquire knowledge about historical, theoretical and research aspects in Psychology. A focus will be placed on the understanding of the contribution of experimental studies to the development of contemporary Psychology.
The course will allow students to acquire current knowledge on how Psychology developed from the second half of the ‘800 till recent days. Students will be able to evaluate and utilize knowledge that is more relevant for their specific educational path. The course will enable students to understand the implication of psychological research for the field of applied psychology and education, with a special focus on the work setting outlined by their educational path. In this context, part of the course will be dedicated to the knowledge of the contribution of the psychological research concerning the period of development from birth to 3 years of age. Students will also know how to obtain recent scientific literature related to psychological matters by online library, such as PubMed or Scopus. Moreover, they will develop the ability to analyze a scientific paper and describe its content clearly and briefly.

The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Educational objectives

The course "Natural Language Processing for linguists" aims to train professionals with both theoretical and practical skills in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on the tools and methodologies used in computational linguistics. The objectives include acquiring fundamental knowledge about linguistic models and NLP techniques, as well as the practical applications of these technologies in the humanities, with a special focus on linguistics. Lectures will be supported by practical computer exercises, where students will learn to implement and use linguistic analysis and annotation software. In particular, the didactical goal of the archaeological section of the course is represented by the study of Minoan and Mycenaean civilization, in the wider context of the Mediterranean area, from the islands (Cyprus, Cyclades) to Anatolia (Hittite empire), and from Syrian and Palestinian coasts to the Egypt and to the far routes to Italic coasts; the didactical goal of the philological section of the course is the philological interpretation and study of the Greek Mycenaean texts (II mill. a.C.).

The course aims to examine the characteristics, the methodology and the areas of intervention of the experimental research in the educational sciences and the possibility of using the results of the research in the assumption of educational policy decisions. The epistemological and methodological problems facing the field research in the educational sciences will be examined with particular attention to the research on the effectiveness of training systems in the transmission of linguistic skills.
After completing the course the students and students will have acquired knowledge on the main themes of experimental pedagogy and will be able to know and understand general topics and problems related to the fields of study of the educational sciences. Students will acquire knowledge on the use of research and analysis methodologies.
Through the attendance of the experimental pedagogy course, students will acquire the ability to apply the knowledge and skills acquired and therefore to design and conduct small experimental research, to construct validate and use assessment and observation tools. They will also be in a position to present the collected data so that they are also accessible to non-expert readers.

The course aims to provide students with the linguistic knowledge to deal with Armenian texts of medium difficulty, directing them to the understanding of the main historical and literary dynamics that characterized ancient Armenian culture. Students will be able to exercise the knowledge and understanding acquired in order to analyze texts and historical contexts that are new, although connected with those they have already encountered in their field of study. This way, the students will be able to take note of the more complex articulation of the ancient world and to refine their ability to reflect on this complexity and evaluate it. Students will be guided to express and communicate these reflections and evaluations in a clear and understandable way. The aim of the course is to develop in students the learning skills necessary to continue and deepen the study independently.

The course will enable students to navigate the essential issues of Ethiopian linguistics,
in its broader sense as the history of the languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. A systematic
introductory presentation of the linguistic situation in the Ethiopian-Eritrean region and the Horn of
Africa—with a prevailing focus on the Semitic languages of the Horn that exhibit a longer phase of
attestation (Ethiopian, Amharic, Tigrinya, Harari, with the important precedent of the epigraphic
Sabaic of Ethiopia), with references to the Afro-Asiatic framework—will enable students to
familiarize themselves with a tradition of scholarship that has addressed important questions of
method: from linguistic classification and the relationship of modern Ethiopian Semitic languages to
Classical Ethiopic, to the comparison of records that differ profoundly in quality, continuity and
extent; from the phenomena of areal convergence between languages belonging to different
families though within the same macro-family (Semitic and Cushitic), to the role of linguistics in the
reconstruction of the protohistory of the area, with application of glottostatistical and
glottochronological methods; from the relationships between linguistics and philology, especially
with reference to Ethiopic, to the phenomena of ‘hierarchical biliguism’ in the distribution of usage
(e.g. between Ethiopic and Amharic, with reference to literary and documentary texts). Depending
on demand, the course may move in specific directions: from the systematic presentation of the
Semitic languages of Ethiopia in their attestation to an in-depth study of the phonological,
morphological, syntactic and typological structure of one of them, to the reading of texts (from late
antique epigraphy to present-day documents) with detailed linguistic-philological commentary.
