Educational objectives The course will enable students to navigate the essential issues of Ethiopian linguistics,
in its broader sense as the history of the languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. A systematic
introductory presentation of the linguistic situation in the Ethiopian-Eritrean region and the Horn of
Africa—with a prevailing focus on the Semitic languages of the Horn that exhibit a longer phase of
attestation (Ethiopian, Amharic, Tigrinya, Harari, with the important precedent of the epigraphic
Sabaic of Ethiopia), with references to the Afro-Asiatic framework—will enable students to
familiarize themselves with a tradition of scholarship that has addressed important questions of
method: from linguistic classification and the relationship of modern Ethiopian Semitic languages to
Classical Ethiopic, to the comparison of records that differ profoundly in quality, continuity and
extent; from the phenomena of areal convergence between languages belonging to different
families though within the same macro-family (Semitic and Cushitic), to the role of linguistics in the
reconstruction of the protohistory of the area, with application of glottostatistical and
glottochronological methods; from the relationships between linguistics and philology, especially
with reference to Ethiopic, to the phenomena of ‘hierarchical biliguism’ in the distribution of usage
(e.g. between Ethiopic and Amharic, with reference to literary and documentary texts). Depending
on demand, the course may move in specific directions: from the systematic presentation of the
Semitic languages of Ethiopia in their attestation to an in-depth study of the phonological,
morphological, syntactic and typological structure of one of them, to the reading of texts (from late
antique epigraphy to present-day documents) with detailed linguistic-philological commentary.
