Educational objectives

In consistency with the educational purposes of the whole teaching course, aim of the teaching unit is to give students knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Classical Philology, that complete and/or reinforce those acquired in the first grade of studies. Moreover, it will make the students able to approach orginal themes in a research context, making more complex judgments, communicating knowledge and its process, and studying the subject in an independent and self-educational way. In particular, the course aims at providing students with the capacity to investigate a classical literary work from an historical, linguistic and critical point of view.

Students must develop a critical approach to the text and the translated text to be translated by analyzing the different strategies available to the translator, the effect on the player's chosen strategy and its alternatives. At
the end of the module, students should be able to translate a wide range of text types (mainly from English into Italian), the
translation with a commentary accompagnado theoretical / technical English.

Improvement in the field of theoretical-metalinguistic knowledge and skills in French linguistics, including areas such as applied linguistics, speech analysis, translatological studies, history of language, stylistics, intercultural studies.
Improvement of the written and oral French language skills aimed at reaching the C1 level.
Finally, by the end of the course students should be able to make links between the theoretical component and the practical analytical component relating to specific cases; they will also be able to develop their knowledge via the bibliography and case studies provided as a model and methodology throughout the course.

Educational objectives

Aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Ancient Greek Dialectology. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. In particular, the course will provide students with some more advanced notions of Greek language and literature together with epigraphical competences and skills, that are necessary for the study of Ancient Greek Dialects.

The Global Englishes course analyses the linguistic and ideological dynamics that have contributed to the spread and transformation of English as a global language. Through a critical approach, students will examine linguistic variation in its multiple forms, from postcolonial varieties to English as a lingua franca as well as new emerging practices in educational and professional contexts. Particular attention will be given to ideologies of standardisation and the perception of the “legitimacy” of different English varieties, along with their impact on intercultural communication.
By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyse the role of English in global contexts, understand the sociolinguistic implications of its emerging varieties and develop an informed perspective on issues of power, language ownership and identity.

Acquire the ability to understand and explore theoretical and applied issues inherent in educational linguistics and language education, in bi-, pluri- and multilingualism. In particular, the didactical goal of the archaeological section of the course is represented by the study of Minoan and Mycenaean civilization, in the wider context of the Mediterranean area, from the islands (Cyprus, Cyclades) to Anatolia (Hittite empire), and from Syrian and Palestinian coasts to the Egypt and to the far routes to Italic coasts; the didactical goal of the philological section of the course is the philological interpretation and study of the Greek Mycenaean texts (II mill. a.C.).

The course "Natural Language Processing for linguists" aims to train professionals with both theoretical and practical skills in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on the tools and methodologies used in computational linguistics. The objectives include acquiring fundamental knowledge about linguistic models and NLP techniques, as well as the practical applications of these technologies in the humanities, with a special focus on linguistics. Lectures will be supported by practical computer exercises, where students will learn to implement and use linguistic analysis and annotation software. At the end of the course, students will be able to process, analyze, and create linguistic data, understand and apply NLP techniques to text, and collaborate effectively with technical teams for the development of NLP solutions. The areas covered will include: the extraction and study of collocations, Word Sense Disambiguation, Entity Linking, Semantic Role Labeling and sentence representations, the creation of benchmarks for language understanding and Large Language Models.

The course aims to provide students with the linguistic knowledge to deal with Armenian texts of medium difficulty, directing them to the understanding of the main historical and literary dynamics that characterized ancient Armenian culture. Students will be able to exercise the knowledge and understanding acquired in order to analyze texts and historical contexts that are new, although connected with those they have already encountered in their field of study. This way, the students will be able to take note of the more complex articulation of the ancient world and to refine their ability to reflect on this complexity and evaluate it. Students will be guided to express and communicate these reflections and evaluations in a clear and understandable way. The aim of the course is to develop in students the learning skills necessary to continue and deepen the study independently.

The course will enable students to navigate the essential issues of Ethiopian linguistics, in its broader sense as the history of the languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea. A systematic introductory presentation of the linguistic situation in the Ethiopian-Eritrean region and the Horn of Africa—with a prevailing focus on the Semitic languages of the Horn that exhibit a longer phase of attestation (Ethiopian, Amharic, Tigrinya, Harari, with the important precedent of the epigraphic Sabaic of Ethiopia), with references to the Afro-Asiatic framework—will enable students to familiarize themselves with a tradition of scholarship that has addressed important questions of method: from linguistic classification and the relationship of modern Ethiopian Semitic languages to Classical Ethiopic, to the comparison of records that differ profoundly in quality, continuity and extent; from the phenomena of areal convergence between languages belonging to different families though within the same macro-family (Semitic and Cushitic), to the role of linguistics in the reconstruction of the protohistory of the area, with application of glottostatistical and glottochronological methods; from the relationships between linguistics and philology, especially with reference to Ethiopic, to the phenomena of ‘hierarchical bilinguism’ in the distribution of usage (e.g. between Ethiopic and Amharic, with reference to literary and documentary texts). Depending on demand, the course may move in specific directions: from the systematic presentation of the Semitic languages of Ethiopia in their attestation to an in-depth study of the phonological, morphological, syntactic and typological structure of one of them, to the reading of texts (from late antique epigraphy to present-day documents) with detailed linguistic-philological commentary. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the linguistic situation in the Ethiopian-Eritrean region and recognise the various forms in which it is documented; to read and transcribe Ethiopian script correctly; to analyse the fundamental grammatical structures of the languages covered (Ethiopian and, where applicable, Amharic and/or Tigrinya); to use the essential research tools (bibliographic, grammatical and lexicographical, both printed and digital); to conduct research on characteristic linguistic phenomena; and to identify the linguistically distinctive features of the region and the language families covered.

Aim of the teaching unit is to give students a basic knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of Ancient Greek Dialectology. Moreover, it will make the student able to apply the acquired knowledge in an expert and reflective way, making autonomous judgments, communicating ideas, problems and reflections in a clear and correct way, and developing the knowledge required to go further in the studies. In particular, the course will provide students with some more advanced notions of Greek language and literature together with epigraphical competences and skills, that are necessary for the study of Ancient Greek Dialects.

The Global Englishes course analyses the linguistic and ideological dynamics that have contributed to the spread and transformation of English as a global language. Through a critical approach, students will examine linguistic variation in its multiple forms, from postcolonial varieties to English as a lingua franca as well as new emerging practices in educational and professional contexts. Particular attention will be given to ideologies of standardisation and the perception of the “legitimacy” of different English varieties, along with their impact on intercultural communication.
By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyse the role of English in global contexts, understand the sociolinguistic implications of its emerging varieties and develop an informed perspective on issues of power, language ownership and identity.

Educational objectives

The course aims at providing an introduction to the Coptic language, focusing on phonetic, morphosyntactic and basic linguistic aspects (with particular attention to the Saidian dialect, but not exclusively). During the lessons, students will come into contact with a large textual corpus that includes, among other things, the Nag Hammadi literature and magical texts.
The course also introduces students to the essential tools for the study of Coptic: dictionaries, grammars and digital humanities resources.
