Ethiopic philology

Course objectives

Through the study of the tradition and edition of Ethiopic epigraphic, literary, and documentary texts, the student will acquire elements of philological and codicological methodology; skills in the analysis and understanding of forms of written knowledge in the variety of their attestations; in their editing, description, and historical-cultural contextualization; and in the diversity, richness, and complexity of cultural and religious expressions..

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
The course will present the historical-linguistic-cultural development of Ethiopia and Eritrea from its origins to the medieval and modern ages, also through the reading and commentary of a selection of texts that are relevant from both the linguistic and the historical-cultural point of view.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the Ethiopic language is desirable, but not essential.
Books
The bibliographical material and detailed directions will be indicated during the course. Please, take note of the following reference texts (see section in Italian).
Frequency
Attendance (and active participation) are mandatory.
Exam mode
Assessment will take into account active participation, consisting of the indispensable study of the topics and texts introduced, and a final examination in the form of an oral interview.
