MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY I

Course objectives

Upon completion of the course the student must have in-depth knowledge of the morphological and physiological characteristics of pathogenic and commensal microorganisms; on the cellular and molecular bases of microbial pathogenicity; on microorganism-host interactions and on innate and acquired host resistance to infections. In addition, the student must know the microbial diseases of the oral cavity and the mechanisms of cellular response and inflammation in relation to them. In particular, the course aims to provide the student with the cognitive and methodological tools necessary to relate the peculiar characteristics of microorganisms with the beginning and evolution of infection diseases; apply the knowledge of the biology of microorganisms to the choice of drugs for the therapy of microbial diseases, and to the choice of the prevention methods.

Course program
-General virology: classification, structure, and replication of viruses; pathogenesis of viral infections, immune response to viral infections.
Prerequisites
In order to understand the teaching contents and achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the didactic activities foreseen by the didactic module, the student must possess general knowledge regarding biology and immunology.
Books
In order to complete the exam, a theoretical study is recommended from the very beginning of attendance at the course. For the purpose of consultation and further study, the recommended book is: Essential Microbiology for Dentistry Lakshman Samaranayake Fifth Edition Elsevier The teacher uses the Google Classroom platform as a teaching aid.
Frequency
Following paragraph 4.5 of the Regulations of the Dental School, the student is required to attend educational activities, formal, non-formal, and vocational. The frequency is checked by the teachers through signature / updated lists provided by the Academic Office, as established by CLMDDP The certificate of mandatory attendance to the teaching course is required for the student to be admitted to the final test.
Exam mode
To pass the exam it is necessary to achieve a grade of not less than 18/30 in each module. The student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered and that he is able to support the ongoing tests independently and coherently. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must instead demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to connect them in a logical and coherent way. For this purpose at the end of the first semester there will be a miderm written test.
Lesson mode
The teacher delivers lectures with traditional methods with audiovisual aids and scheduling of lessons as reported on GOMP Aure/Orari system, published on the website of the Dental School.
