Course objectives

GENERAL PEDAGOGY L19 Course's general goal, also making constant reference to the classics of pedagogy, is to promote basic knowledge of general pedagogy, understanding of its fundamental concepts, and the ability to use knowledge and concepts to reason according to the logic of the discipline. The course aims to investigate the main themes and aspects of general pedagogy: terminology, key concepts, reference theories; main areas of application in relation to other education sciences. Through the frequency of the course it will be possible to know how this discipline has evolved over time and its current fields of study, interest and intervention. In this perspective, taking into account the specific educational objectives of the degree course, the course aims to investigate the multiple places and different ages of life of training (with particular reference to educational contexts involving young children, their families and educational figures) and to acquire basic knowledge on the pedagogy of the help relationship, on the critical pedagogy and on the pedagogy of emergency. A special attention will be paid to the job of educator in childhood services and to the presentation of the various educational services for children aged 0-3. At the end of the course, students will be able to: • understand what pedagogy means today and what is the relationship with learning science • knowing the main theoretical models that have characterized pedagogical thought over time; • know and understand the pedagogical debate about the acknowledgement of the educational jobs and the training established for the various figures operating in the educational area in a formal, not formal, and informal way; • know the various recipients of the educational work, the contexts, and areas of educational action, with a special attention to age 0-3; • to acquire basic knowledge on poverty education, the pedagogy of the help relationship, on the critical pedagogy and on the pedagogy of emergency (Knowledge and understanding). At the end of the course, students will be able to: • interpret and analyse issues and data related to the study field of pedagogy; • read and interpret a pedagogical text, with particular reference to the classics of pedagogy; • collect information using reliable sources and various databases (both bibliographical and webographical); • deal with the various recipients implied in an educational action; • analyse and rework the concepts studied, linking themes, authors and currents; make researches using different sources (Applying knowledge and comprehension). At the end of the course, students will have acquired cross skills related to: • the ability to reflect on issues related to the study field of pedagogy, proving to possess a scientific mind and critical and self-critical skills (such a competence will be also developed by means of debates in small groups, as well as simulations of educational situations); • the ability of independently and critically studying and reading texts and documents, legislative ones too, in the educational area (Making judgments); • the ability to communicate with a specific disciplinary lexicon in a clear and effective way, both orally and in written form, using multimedia tools too, according to the various recipients (such an ability will be developed by means of interventions and debates on the themes studied); • the ability to work in group and to interact with others, with the educational work in mind (Communication skills); • being able to make researches and in-depth analyses about general pedagogy, in order to pursue in an independent way a further education and self-training during one's life and career. Activities contributing to the development of these skills and abilities are: group works; workshop activities mainly dedicated to the age 0-3; interventions of experts (Learning skills).

Course program
During the lessons, while constantly referring to the classics of education, the main themes related to general pedagogy (in connection with the educational sciences) will be addressed, with particular attention to the nature, structure, and pragmatic logic of pedagogical knowledge, its terminology, key concepts, theories, reference models, and contexts. Through the teaching of General Pedagogy, students will also have the opportunity to understand how this discipline has evolved, as well as its current fields of study, interests, and areas of intervention. Taking into account the specific educational objectives of the Bachelor’s Degree Course in Educational Sciences and Training, the course also aims to explore the multiple settings and different stages of life and education (with particular focus on educational contexts involving young children, their families, and educational figures) and to provide students with basic knowledge of critical-emancipatory pedagogy. In this perspective, a part of the course will be specifically dedicated to the pedagogical and educational work of Danilo Dolci and Gianni Rodari. An integral part of the course is a workshop dedicated to the 0–3 age group. Participation in the workshop activities is mandatory in order to take the final exam. Students who are unable to attend the workshop must contact the instructor to define an individual assignment. The course is ideally divided into three parts. The first part (9 lessons) will be devoted to examining the nature, structure, and pragmatic logic of pedagogical knowledge, its terminology, key concepts, theories, and reference models. The second part (7 lessons) will focus on critical-emancipatory pedagogy and on the pedagogical and educational work of Danilo Dolci and Gianni Rodari. Finally, the third part of the course includes the implementation of a workshop dedicated to the 0–3 age group (5 lessons, for a total of 12 hours). The workshop aims to further explore the central themes of general pedagogy within the context of the integrated 0–6 educational system. Students, divided into small groups, will be required to produce and present written papers and/or multimedia projects at the end of the workshop activities. Participation in the workshop activities is mandatory in order to take the exam. Students who, due to unforeseen circumstances, are unable to attend the workshop must contact the instructor to arrange an individual assignment.

1) E. Corbi, P. Perillo, F. Chello, La pedagogia in questione. Non-attending students should contact the lecturer for the indication of compensatory materials. These materials will be subject to assessment of learning in the examination (written test). Reference bibliography Additional texts and readings will be suggested in relation to the various topics covered in the course of the lectures and the students' interests. The study of the in-depth materials indicated in the course of the lectures is not to be considered compulsory for the purpose of passing the proficiency exam.
Frequency
Attendance: in person. Class attendance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. Non-attending students should contact the lecturer for the indication of compensatory materials. These materials will be subject to assessment of learning in the examination (written test). Completion of the activities related to the laboratory is mandatory in order to pass the exam. Students who cannot attend the laboratory must contact the lecturer to define the work to be done individually.
Exam mode
Examination and Assessment The final examination will be written and will cover the topics addressed during the lectures and included in the required readings. The exam format will differ for attending and non-attending students. For attending students: The written exam will consist of three open-ended questions based on closed prompts, each worth 8 points (8/30). For non-attending students: The written exam will consist of three (3) open-ended questions based on closed prompts related to the required readings (each worth 8 points – 8/30) and one (1) additional open-ended question based on the compensatory material (worth 3 points – 3/30). The laboratory activity and/or the related assignment will contribute up to 3 points (3/30) to the overall grade. Assessment of the laboratory work will take into account the student’s quality of participation in group activities and the quality of the written or multimedia work produced—either in small groups or, in exceptional cases, individually. The final grade for the course will therefore be the sum of the points obtained in the written exam (up to 27/30) and those obtained from the laboratory component (up to 3/30). To pass the exam, students must achieve a minimum overall score of 18/30. The written examination will have a duration of two (2) hours. The evaluation of the exam will be based on the following general criteria: mastery and conceptual organization of the thematic content; breadth and coherence of the discussion; accuracy and appropriateness of specialized terminology; depth of analysis and ability to establish theoretical connections; capacity for critical reflection and re-elaboration of knowledge. For attending students, the final assessment will also take into account active participation in class and the quality of the activities carried out during the course (including those conducted via the Moodle platform). The choice of a written exam format aligns with the expected learning outcomes, particularly regarding the students’ ability to make theoretical (including interdisciplinary) connections and to critically rework acquired knowledge. No mid-term exams are scheduled. Vuoi
