PSYCHODYNAMICS OF RELATIONS

Course objectives

Learning Objectives The course intends to offer students an introduction to the evaluation of group dynamics, a ultimate group with history: the family group that will be analyzed both from the diachronic and the synchronic point of view according to the theoretical systemic relational orientation. This assessment will make the student competent in the analysis of the relationships of "functional" and "dysfunctional" families through the use of the observational method. The student will be able to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in practical activities or in individual exercises during the course and an interview with a family proposed at the end of the course, whose outcome, is able to influence the final mark on the exam. General Objectives The general objective of the Course is the knowledge of the family system in the fundamental features of its structure and relationships . The lectures will be useful to propose some theoretical concepts that refer to the clinical and theoretical practice of the systemic relational approach. The work in small groups will instead be decisive for the application of same theoretical concepts treated in class. Specific Objectives Knowledge and Understanding The student who will pass the exam will be able to: - observing and recognizing the properties of communication between two or more communicants as well as in extended relational contexts -Distinguish the “functional” families from the “dysfunctional” ones Applying Knowledge and Understanding The student who will pass the exam will be able to identify the relational dynamics according to which the "traditional" families and the new family forms are structured (single-parent families, divorced, families, step families, same sex families, migrant families...). According to the systemic / relational model, the FAMILY is conceived as a developing “open system”, composed of SUBSYSTEMS based on the functions performed by its members during its life cycle through the FAMILY BOUNDARIES. Through the use of the ecomap tool, the student will be able to understand the importance of the interpersonal context in the development of the individual and, through the use of the genogram tool, the intergenerational transmission modalities of specific transactional models (S. Minuchin ) learned in the fundamental contexts, at the base of the individual's relational behavior. Making Judgements During the lessons the students' contributions will be stimulated to encourage participation and reflection on the acquired knowledge. The written exercises on scientific topics that emerged during the lessons also have the objective of developing a reflective ability useful for the student's subsequent progression. In the practical test (small teamwork: family interview), the student will be able to experiment in observing the knowledge acquired in class. In addition, always in the small group, each student will play a different role: one will take care of the interview, one will observe the non-verbal behavior of the family, one will note the emerging communication exchanges during the interview, one will build the family genogram, etc. The final work that will constitute the essay will be the assembly of all the information obtained from each student, which necessarily implies a comparison between the members of the group. Communication skills The task of each member of the small group will therefore contribute to the acquisition of a specific technical language that will also become shared. The same task will also contribute to the comparison with colleagues, equally engaged in the interview, but with different roles, as mentioned above. Learning skills The course will serve the student to acquire the basic knowledge necessary for his professional growth that will allow him to deepen the concepts learned

Course program
Program The course will be articulated as follows: a first part in which the Axioms of Human Communication will be treated, to then move on to the Pioneers of Family Therapy who initially spread the general concepts of the new Systemic-Relational Theory. In this regard, some theoretical/clinical methodologies for an assessment of the Family Relations will be discussed, such as the 'genogram' and the 'family sculpture'. The Development of the Theory will follow until its most recent applications. The concept of parenting will also be addressed: its characteristics, the dynamics between parents and children, its support through the psychological interventions of 'Family Mediation', 'Neutral Space', 'support for parenting skills during critical moments'. It is in all cases of interventions that students will learn to distinguish from Psychotherapy. Content of the course The Course aims to examine the Systemic Relational Theory from its origins to its recent Developments, considering the family as an 'open system' with a 'structure' that includes within it 'subsystems', whose functioning is regulated by 'boundaries'. This will allow to deal with some important peculiarities that have characterized the theory since its inception, characterized by the pioneering studies on Communication. To this end it will be examined in the Course (the hours are indicative, with possibility of variation according to the didactic needs): -I ° MODULE (about 20 h): functional and dysfunctional communication, its rules, its behavioral effects, the pathology (Watzlawick P., Beavin J., Jackson D. D., Pragmatics of Human Communication) -II ° MODULE (about 27 h): the Pioneers of Family Therapy who first introduced some specific themes and subsequent developments; Family Relations, the importance of the interpersonal CONTEXT for the growth of the individual through the study of the tools of the Genogram and the Ecomap. The concepts analyzed will be useful to the student to understand the distinction between “functional” and “dysfunctional” families, as well as the protective and risk factors involved in the development of the individual (Tafà M., Bracaglia F. Conoscere la famiglia: strumenti clinici e di ricerca) - III ° MODULE (about 15 h): the evolution of the family overtime will be treated, therefore its Life Cycle. Moreover, the various current forms of the family: from the "traditional" family to the current new family forms (in this regard, the Course provides a specific study on "same sex families") ●Tafà M., Bracaglia F., Conoscere la famiglia: strumenti clinici e di ricerca. ●Malagoli Togliatti M., Lubrano Lavadera A., Dinamiche relazionali e Ciclo di Vita della famiglia. ●Biondi P., Bracaglia F., Omosessualità e famiglie: legami, relazioni, nuove sfide. -IV MODULE (about 10 h): The student's meeting with the family in its theoretical and clinical aspects, will also consider the differences between the Psychotherapeutic Interview and the Interview in the Parenting Support Interventions, such as Family Mediation, NeutralSpace, support for parenting in crisis during the Life Cycle ●Malagoli Togliatti M., Tafà M., Gli interventi sulla genitorialità nei nuovi Centri per le Famiglie ●M. Tafà, Appunti sulla Genitorialità
Prerequisites
It will be important that the student has already acquired basic information relating to the stages of emotional, affective and cognitive development of the individual as well as the most frequent psychopathological evolutionary manifestations.

Frequency
Regular attendance of the Course is not mandatory, but highly recommended.
Exam mode
Assessment Examinations will be conducted through written assignments with 'closed' questions. Oral language examinations are also scheduled for foreign students participating in Erasmus or a 'dual-title' Course: in this regard, notification is required during class or by e-mail. Objective of the test The objective of the examination will be to test the learning achieved by the student and his or her ability to use technical terms appropriately. Number of tests and time placement The examination test will be a single one. Type, duration and mode of administration The exam will be written with closed questions: specifically 30 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes. Final Evaluation The final examination of the Course will be the grade obtained on the written test.
Lesson mode
The course will be held through lectures with the use of slides relating to the topics covered in class. The student's participation will also be stimulated through: -'written exercises' to contribute to the achievement of the training objectives: these exercises will focus on specific topics covered in class and will NOT BE evaluated -'simulations' of typical situations -'videos', useful for the student to visualize the behavior of a family 'in action', as well as the properties of Family Relations already emerged in class.
