EVALUATION AND INTERVENTIONS IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Course objectives

General goals
Course's general goal is to enable students to analyse a request of clinical-psychological intervention, understand its meaning inside a coherent theoretical frame, construct an intervention project coherent with the analysis, find methods and techniques useful for its realisation, verify the process and the final result. For this purpose, during the classes will be discussed the main orientations in clinical psychology, their limits and their effect on problems pertaining intervention in clinical psychology. Specific goals 1)Knowledge and understanding To know the fundamentals of clinical psychology according to the evaluation and intervention processes on individuals, organisations, and communities 2) Applying knowledge and understanding To arrange an individual and/or group assessment aimed at understanding the emotional dynamics at the basis of the intervention request To arrange the stages of data collection, analysis, and interpretation, formulation of intervention hypotheses, identification of tools and methods useful for the intervention implementation To detect the indicators of process and result verification To write a clinical report 3) Making judgements The student will learn to manage the evaluation of client's verbal and non-verbal behaviours, so to seize the main expressed and hidden meanings, inside a frame of theoretical and methodological coherence. To know the restrictions established by the code of professional conduct 4) Communication skills The student will learn to use an adequate technical lexicon to communicate with colleagues and other experts, and a clear and understandable language to communicate with persons in general 5)Learning skills To exactly understand difficult texts To be able to summarise them and express them in a clear and coherent way To be able to detect the critical and/or contradictory elements of a theory

Course program
The program develops from models proposed by clinical community psychology, with a focus on the design and evaluation of psychological interventions. In the first part, the course includes an examination of a theoretical-clinical model based on the contributions of intervention-oriented clinical psychology in contexts and community psychology. The model is functional in developing the competence to read the individual-context relationship at different levels of complexity, identifying critical issues, resources and demands for change. In a second part, the program includes the acquisition of methods of diagnosis and intervention in group (work groups, self-help groups, circle time...), organizational and community contexts and the development of skills useful for the design of psychological interventions for prevention and promotion of well-being. The latter, in particular, is the goal pursued by the laboratory activities. To achieve this goal, students divided into small groups will work on the drafting of a psychological intervention project. The main knowledge gained will be: basic elements of intervention design; strengths and weaknesses of intervention design projects. The main skills will be: identification of the stages of design; ability to apply the knowledge gained on the design of psychological interventions.

Regular and participatory attendance is recommended
Exam mode
Number of tests and time allocation. The exam will be taken at the end of the course, in a written form. Type, duration and method of administration. The test will aim to verify the knowledge of the theoretical models presented in the course, but also the skills of reflection and discussion of the intervention models within the psychological contexts. The test will last 30 minutes and it will have questions with open-ended answers and questions with multiple-choice answers. Example open-ended questions: 1. The role of the social in community psychology 2. Evaluation of the effectiveness of a project N.B. reservations for the exam close at least 7 days before the exam date
Lesson mode
The didactic model will be a combination of: - lectures, in order to expose the theoretical-practical principles related to Community and the core competences necessary to plan psychological interventions. - simulations, linked to the use of evaluation tools. - group work, in order to stimulate participation, deepening and critical reflection on the concepts presented. - analysis of intervention projects, in order to apply the knowledge acquired in critical discussions of intervention models. - laboratory experience, is aimed at the acquisition of skills on the planning and implementation of psychological interventions in health care settings. In particular, students will participate, in small groups, in the planning activities of psychological interventions in the field of health prevention and promotion.
