International experiences

Sapienza offers numerous opportunities for study, research, and traineeships abroad: in Europe and outside Europe, for short stays or longer periods, for thesis research abroad, and much more.

Study periods in European Countries: Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes transnational cooperation among higher education institutions; it funds student mobility for study purposes (SMS) in all disciplines and at all study levels (including PhD programmes) and supports the academic recognition of studies within the European Higher Education Area.
The Erasmus+ programme allows students to attend courses and take exams with full recognition in their academic curriculum, or to carry out research for their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral thesis.

Traineeships in European Countries: Erasmus+ Traineeship
Erasmus+ traineeship mobility enables students to undertake internships at companies, training centres, and research institutions located in one of the participating countries.
The programme allows students to carry out full-time traineeship activities abroad, recognised as an integral part of their Degree Courseme. Traineeships may also be undertaken after graduation, provided that the selection takes place before the degree is awarded.
The number of mobility months is added to those spent for Erasmus study periods, up to the maximum duration allowed by the programme.

Study periods in non-EU Countries: Overseas Programme
Thanks to funding provided by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR) and Sapienza’s own resources, the University offers each year the opportunity to spend a study period—either to take exams or conduct thesis research—at one of over 200 non-EU institutions with which Sapienza has bilateral agreements.
The Overseas mobility programme provides a monthly grant of €700 net per month for the first five months and €500 net per month from the sixth month onwards. The stay abroad must be continuous, last at least 90 days, and may not exceed two consecutive semesters.
The grant may be awarded only once per study cycle and cannot be combined with other Sapienza mobility grants.

Study or Research periods in non-EU Countries: Erasmus+ KA171 International Credit Mobility (ICM)
The Erasmus+ ICM programme, funded by the European Commission, enables students and academic staff to spend a study or research period for thesis work, or a teaching/training period, in non-EU countries. The programme provides a scholarship and travel cost coverage.
All activities carried out abroad are recognised upon return by the relevant Sapienza academic staff, as established in the Learning Agreement. Student mobility may last from a minimum of 3 to 6 months (with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 12 months, of which the last 6 months without a scholarship – Zero-EU Grant modality).
The ICM grant also supports doctoral research mobility for the same duration. Travel costs are calculated using the Distance Calculator, based on the distance between the city of the home university and that of the host institution.
