The aim of the course is to fournish to the students the main theoretical and empirical tools to compare two or more cases. In particular, the course is organized as to offer to the students the main concepts in the field and to acquire the ability to analyze "cases study", such as institutions, electoral systems, the party systems, and political parties, etc. After completing the course the student understands the logic of the specific operation of the two models of democracy (majoritarian and consensual) and the three main forms of government; knows the main institutional features and policies of the various systems of government in Europe and the USA, with particular reference to political parties and party systems; S/he is able to master the problems related to the comparison of different systems of government. Moreover, the goal is to provide both theoretical and empirical skills useful to write a brief essay, as crucial for students' further activities, both in academia and in their professional career.

Educational objectives

The course provides an introduction to the main basic methods and tools for the quantitative assessment of economic policies, in particular regional, industrial and labor market policies. The main objectives of the course are:
a) knowledge of the main counterfactual methods at the basic level for policy evaluation
b) provide the statistical bases to allow knowledge of counterfactual methods of policy evaluation
c) development of the skills related to the critical evaluation of policy evaluation analysis, also through the study of specific evaluation studies

Educational objectives

The course aims to provide a deep knowledge of the history of political movements and parties in Europe and Italy and its relationship with the main international political processes from the end of the Ancien Regime to current political context. Within the course there will be a focus dedicated to the development of environmental movements and "green" parties in Italy and in Europe after World War II.
The issues of genesis and evolution of parties, of their connection with the other political players, of their institutional role and their relationship with the society will be highlighted.
At the end of the course students will be able to analyze the main issues of the modern political system and the role played by the parties in it.
The contemporary party-form will be studied in perspective, looking at its future evolution both in its political and social dimension. Thanks to this approach, the keyconcepts of the course could be applied to other scientific contexts of the course program and used to develop researches.
Student's critical skills will be trained by a constant dialogue with the professor, use of different research materials and by a term paper on books regarding the main issues of the course. This paper will permit students to enlarge their perception of the issues related to the course and to verify their analysis' skills reflecting on the possible implication of these topics in the main contents of the program.
At the final lessons students give a final presentation on their term papers and will be able to compare their opinions and points of view with the rest of the class.
In this way the course aims to assess and strength students' analytical skills and exposition in teamwork and, at the same time, their daily use outside learning context.

The course aims to offer students the knowledge of the main theories on political communication, mass-communication and political/social actors communication's strategies. In addition, special attention will be paid to some issues, such as political communication effects, campagin's strategies and the evolution of political communication throughout online tools (such as social networks and blogs).
Communication skills and the ability to elaborate analysis and judgments on the issues addressed will also be stimulated through active participation in open discussions with external guests and by gathering and discussing empirical case-studies.
Through these opportunities, the course aims to offer theoretical and empirical tools for the analysis of the political communication processes and the relationships among media, political and social actors.

Educational objectives

The course aims at introducing students to the knowledge of citizenship as social, cultural, political and institutional phenomenon. Citizenship has been of crucial importance in the building of democratic societies; but nowadays it is living deep changes. These changes have given place to unexpected developments, with uncertain results. In any case, they have definitely modified the citizenship device, which remains, however, an essential point of reference for the building and development of democratic societies.

Specific objectives of the course are the following:
- To offer students a systematic knowledge of democratic citizenship as an inclusion, cohesion and development device of modern and contemporary societies, with reference to the results of scientific research started in the '90s;
- To enable students to employ an empirical approach to observe and analyze social, cultural, political and institutional dynamics involving democratic citizenship;
- To favor the students' abilities to evaluate situations and processes, as well as to build scenarios on the future of democratic citizenship, through case studies, dialogue with experts, discussion on controversial topics, exercises.

1. Knowledge and understanding: through the lessons, students will gain appropriate knowledge to understand the phenomenon of democratic citizenship through the conceptual structure that will be provided.
2. Applying knowledge and understanding: the mix of theoretical topics and analysis of materials and cases will enable students to develop a proper operational ability, so that they will learn to use concepts and theories at the end of gather information on citizenship and its transformations.

The monographic component of this course focuses on the use of language in specific politics and international relations contexts. Throughout the course, specific examples on the use of English in political, institutional, diplomatic and mass communication contexts will be analyzed from linguistic and pragmatic-discursive points of view. Through practical examples, the relationship between language and power will be highlighted with a specific focus on politics as a discursive practice.

The recognition of the aforesaid activities will take place by delivering the relative certificates to the student office, between September and December of each year. The student can acquire these activities starting from the first year of the course. The recognition can only take place by simultaneously submitting all the documents relating to the total of 6 credits in the Secretariat.
