RAFFAELLA PERNA

Raffaella Perna è Professoressa associata di Storia dell’arte contemporanea alla Sapienza Università di Roma. I suoi ambiti di ricerca riguardano le relazioni tra arte e femminismo, la storia della fotografia, le neoavanguardie artistiche degli anni Sessanta e Settanta. È autrice dei libri: Piero Manzoni e Roma (2017), Pablo Echaurren, il movimento del ‘77 e gli indiani metropolitani (2016), Arte, fotografia e femminismo in Italia negli anni Settanta (2013), Wilhelm von Gloeden (2013), In forma di fotografia. Ricerca artistiche in Italia dal 1960 al 1970 (2009). Ha curato e co-curato numerose mostre, tra cui: Martha Rocher. Ritratti d’artista (MLAC-Museo Laboratorio d’Arte Contemporanea, Sapienza); Mario Dondero. La libertà e l’impegno (Palazzo Reale, Milano); Ketty La Rocca. Se io fotovivo (Camera Centro italiano per la fotografia, Torino);The Unexpected Subject 1978 Art and Feminism in Italy (Frigoriferi Milanesi, 2019), L’altro sguardo. Record Covers by Artists (Auditorium Parco della Musica, 2010 e 2012). Dal 2022 al 2024 è stata responsabile del progetto Network interuniversitario per conto della Fondazione Quadriennale di Roma. È stata inoltre responsabile di unità locale del Progetto di rilevante interesse nazionale PRIN 2020 Italian Feminist Photography (PI Federica Muzzarelli, Università di Bologna).

Raffaella Perna is Associate Professor for Contemporary History of Art at the University La Sapienza of Rome. Her studies have focused on the links between art and photography in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, on the connections between art and feminism and on the contribution of women in art, photography and art criticism in Italy and North America. A further research strand regards the Neo-avantgarde in Rome between the end of the 1950s and the 1970s.
Her monographs include Piero Manzoni e Roma (2017), Pablo Echaurren. Il movimento del ‘77 e gli indiani metropolitani (2016), Arte, fotografia e femminismo in Italia negli anni Settanta (2013), Wilhelm von Gloeden (2013) and In forma di fotografia (2009).
She has also curated and co-curated exhibitions in museums and foundations, such as: Martha Rocher. Ritratti d’artista (MLAC-Museo Laboratorio d'Arte Contemporanea, the University La Sapienza of Rome, exhibition catalogue, Electa, Milan); Mario Dondero. La libertà e l’impegno (Palazzo Reale, Milan); Ketty La Rocca. From March 2022 to July 2024 she directed the project “Network Inter-universitario” promoted by La Fondazione Quadriennale di Roma, which aimed to facilitate the relationships between the institution, universities and research centres amd promote research on twenty-first century Italian art.
She is currently head of unit for two projects of national relevant interest: the PRIN 2020 “Italian Feminist Photography” (led by the University of Bologna) and the PRIN 2022 "Women Writing around the Camera" (led by the University of Sassari). She is a founding member of the Research Centre FAF - Photography, Art, Feminism (University of Bologna) and was part of the Research Centre GRASP – Research Group on Art and the Public Sphere (University of Bologna).
She was on the editorial committee of the top tier (Fascia A) journal “Arabeschi. Rivista di Studi su letteratura e visualità” and from 2016 she joined the editorial committee of the journal “PianoB”, also Fascia A.
In 2018, she directed the publishing series “Quaderni della Fondazione Echaurren Salaris” published by Postmedia Books, Milan. She curated the “Arte e femminismi” column in Flash Art (Milan).
In 2012 she was awarded funding at La Sapienza of Rome to launch the project “Ketty La Rocca: l'opera fotografica e video” (Ketty La Rocca: photographic and video works), leading her to co-edit the book “Ketty La Rocca. Nuovi studi” (Ketty La Rocca. New Studies) with Francesca Gallo for Postmedia Books, Milan 2015.
