Curriculum

Mara Lombardi is Associate Professor of Excavation engineering and safety at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Materials and Environment of Sapienza University of Rome, where she conducts research in the fields of risk analysis, resilience assessment, Fire Safety Engineering, geostatistical modelling and critical infrastructure management.
She was involved in the PE3 RETURN project, Spoke TS2 – Multi-Risk Resilience of Critical Infrastructures, as WP6 Leader and Co-PI for DICMA Sapienza, and in the FIRE project on wildfire related landslide scenarios for territorial planning and risk management. She will contribute to the research by developing a risk and resilience-based assessment framework for climate adaptive territorial protection, integrating geostatistical modelling, multi hazard analysis, wildfire related landslide scenarios and territorial resilience indicators to support prevention-oriented land use and management strategies.
Mara Lombardi has extensive teaching experience in safety engineering, risk analysis, fire prevention, occupational safety, construction-site safety and territorial resilience. Since 2022, she has taught Rischio e Resilienza Territoriale within the MSc in Safety and Civil Protection Engineering at Sapienza University of Rome, as well as Safety Systems. She has also taught Principi di Prevenzione Incendi, Rischio e Sicurezza nei Cantieri, Analisi di Rischio nelle Opere Civili and Safety and Risk Analysis. She was a member of several doctoral boards at Sapienza University of Rome between 2011 and 2019, including doctoral programmes in Materials Engineering, and Infrastructures and Transports.
Mara Lombardi’s profile is connected to national and international networks in safety engineering, risk analysis, critical infrastructure resilience and fire prevention. At national level, she is member of the Standing Committee on Road Tunnels established at ANSFISA, and has served as expert member of the Regional Technical Advisory Committee for Fire Prevention in Lazio. She was also a member of the Central Technical-Scientific Committee for Fire Prevention from 2021 to 2024.
At international level, she has contributed to the scientific activities of the Wessex Institute of Technology as member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Conference on Safety and Security Engineering – SAFE, and as member of the Scientific Board of the International Journal of Safety and Security Engineering. She also served as President of the Réseau Méditerranéen des Ecoles d’Ingénieurs and as Coordinator of the “Workers Safety in Civil Engineering Committee” within the Engineering Association of Mediterranean Countries. Earlier in her career, she participated in the Sapienza Working Group of PIARC TC C.3.3 on Italian risk analysis for road tunnels.
Mara Lombardi has extensive experience in applied research, technical-scientific coordination and knowledge transfer in the fields of safety engineering, infrastructure risk, fire prevention and resilience assessment. Since 2019, she has been President of the Sapienza start-up Sicurezza 4.0, which operates in the field of safety innovation and applied risk-management solutions.
Her experience also includes participation in national technical bodies related to fire prevention and infrastructure safety, including the ANSFISA Standing Committee on Road Tunnels and fire-prevention technical committees. She is co-author of an Italian patent entitled Sistema di supporto per una evacuazione di un utente da una galleria, registered in 2022, and the CV also reports a further Italian patent application filed in 2025.
Her applied research experience is particularly relevant to the PRIN proposal because it combines probabilistic risk analysis, geostatistical modelling, wildfire-related scenarios, resilience indicators, tunnel and infrastructure safety, decision-support tools and the operational translation of scientific outputs into prevention and management strategies.
Mara Lombardi has held several academic and institutional responsibility roles. She was Chair of the Safety and Civil Protection Engineering Programme at the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering, Sapienza University of Rome, from 2019 to2025. Since 2015, she has served as Responsible for Academic Mobility for the MSc in Safety and Civil Protection Engineering and as Scientific Coordinator of Specialization Courses in Occupational Safety.
Mara Lombardi has coordinated and participated in several scientific and academic initiatives in the fields of fire safety engineering, risk analysis, occupational safety, resilience and critical infrastructure management. Since 2017, she has been Scientific Coordinator of the Research Committee “Fire Safety Engineering according to Prevention Fire Code”, involving Sapienza University of Rome, INAIL and the Italian National Fire and Rescue Service. She has also been a Scientific Board Member of the collaboration between the Faculty of Civil and Industrial Engineering of Sapienza and the National Fire and Rescue Service.
Her coordination experience includes the role of Chair of the Safety and Civil Protection Engineering Programme at Sapienza and the scientific coordination of specialization courses in occupational safety. She is also member of doctoral boards at Sapienza University of Rome from 2011. Internationally, she has contributed to the WIT Safety and Security Engineering scientific community and to Mediterranean engineering networks, including the Engineering Association of Mediterranean Countries and the Réseau Méditerranéen des Ecoles d’Ingénieurs.
She has carried out editorial and scientific-review activities in the field of safety and security engineering. Since 2018, she has served as Co-Editor of the International Journal of Safety and Security Engineering, published by WIT Press, Wessex Institute of Technology. From 2015 to 2017, she was also member of the Scientific Board of the same journal.
She has been member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the International Conference on Safety and Security Engineering – SAFE, organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, contributing to the development of an international scientific network in risk, safety, security and resilience engineering.
