Curriculum

Pierfrancesco Lombardo received the degree in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. degree in remote sensing from the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Rome, Italy, in 1991 and 1995, respectively.
After serving at the Official Test Centre of the Italian Air Force in 1992, he was Associate with Birmingham University (UK) and at Defence Research Agency in Malvern, in 1994. In 1995, he was research associate at Syracuse University (NY-USA). In 1996, he joined the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, where he is presently Full Professor since 2005.

In Sapienza he presently teaches for the BSc in Aerospace Engineering, the MSc in Space and Astronautics Engineering, the MSc in Communication Engineering, and the MSc in Aeronautical Engineering. In the last decade, he served six years as director of BSc and MSc courses in Telecommunication Engineering, two years as president of the Spin-Off Committee, and four years as director of the Ph.D in ICT and is member of the Board of the Master in Satellites and Orbiting Platforms.

Prof. Lombardo raised and leads the “Radar, Remote Sensing and Navigation” (RRSN) group, which has a tradition of research project for both institutional and industrial partners, including EU, MIUR, ESA, ASI, Leonardo-Finmeccanica, Thales Alenia Space, Rheinmetall and others.

He was member of the Scientific Committee of the SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) Joint Undertaking (European Commission & Eurocontrol (2009-2011). He was member of the Scientific Committee of POLARIS, the technical journal of SELEX Integrated Systems (Finmeccanica), of the SELEX Academy advanced training school (2010-2012), as well of the Finmeccanica Industries Innovation Prize committee (2013).

The main research interests of Prof. Lombardo include active and passive Radar Systems, adaptive array Radar, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Positioning Systems. His research has been reported in over 330 publications in international technical journals and conferences, a book and seven book chapters. (Google Scholar h-index: 47, Scopus h-index: 39). Among the many scientific contributions, especially significant results have been obtained in: (i) the signal processing for passive and multistatic Radar, (ii) Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) for adaptive array Radar systems, (iii) processing techniques for High Resolution airborne and spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), with special attention to: Ground Moving Target Detection, image improvement using multi-channel receivers and Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) solutions.

Dr. Lombardo is co-recipient of the Barry Carlton (Best Paper) award of IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic System is 2001 and of the best paper award for the IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing in 2003.

He was Senior Technical Editor for Radar Systems (2016 to 2021) and Associate Editor in Chief (2018 to 2020) of the IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems (AES). He was member of the IEEE AES Radar Systems Panel from 2007 to 2019 and is presently member of the Editorial board of IET Proceedings on Radar Sonar and Navigation.

He served in the technical committee of many international conferences on radar systems and signal processing. He was Technical Chairman of the IEEE/ISPRS Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas URBAN’2001, Rome, URBAN’2003, Berlin, and URBAN’2005, Tempe (US). He was also Technical Chairman of the IEEE Radar Conference 2008 in Rome and 2020 in Florence as well as General Chairman of the European Radar Conference EuRAD’2022 in Milan.
