Professore associato per il settore scientifico-disciplinare GEO/01 presso l'Università "La Sapienza" di Roma dal 1/11/2001. Dal 1994 ha svolto attività didattica per i corsi di laurea in Scienze naturali, Scienze geologiche, Beni culturali e Scienze biologiche, attualmente per la Laurea Triennale in Scienze geologiche e la Laurea Magistrale in Geologia di Esplorazione, di cui è stato coordinatore dal 2009 al 2012 e dal 2016 ad oggi. L'attività scientifica riguarda soprattutto due principali filoni di ricerca: lo studio dei foraminiferi meso-cenozoici e quello dei cefalopodi coleoidei. In questi ambiti ha indagato aspetti sistematici, paleoecologici, biostratigrafici e paleobiogeografici.

Johannes Pignatti was born in 1962 in Padova, Italy. His undergraduate studies began at the University of Trieste in 1980 and concluded in 1986 at La Sapienza University of Rome with a summa cum laude degree in Natural Sciences. In 1986 he enrolled in a doctoral program in Paleontology at the University of Modena, completing his Ph.D. on the Paleogene of the Maiella carbonate platform (central Italy) in 1990, under the supervision of Prof. R. Matteucci.

Associate professor in Paleontology and Paleoecology at the same university since November 2001.
Since 1994, Dr Pignatti has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in General Paleontology, Systematic Paleontology, Micropaleontology, Paleoecology and sedimentary facies, Quaternary events and ecosystems, Archeometry and Evolutionary Paleontology in curricula of Natural sciences, Geological sciences, Cultural heritage and Biological sciences at La Sapienza University.
In 2012-2013 and 2014-2015, teacher in Earth sciences in the A060 programme of Natural sciences, Chemistry, Geography and Microbiology high-school teacher training education at La Sapienza University, known nationally as Tirocinio Formativo Attivo (TFA), i.e. Active Educational Training.
At present (2016-2018) he is Head of the Master of Science in Exploration Geology degree at La Sapienza University (as before from 2009 to 2012), and in charge of the Micropaleontology and Optical microscopy Laboratory at the Department of Earth Sciences.
Member of the editorial boards of the Bollettino della Società Paleontologica Italiana, Rivista Italiana di Paleontologia e Stratigrafia (up to 2016), Geologica Romana (up to 2008), Journal of Mediterranean Earth Sciences, and Journal of the Indian Palaeontological Society. Peer-reviewer for over 100 articles submitted to leading journals in Paleontology and Geosciences.
Member of examining boards for the defense of Ph.D. theses at the Universitat de Barcelona (1995, 2015), Università di Roma Tre (2007), Università di Milano (2011), Università di Modena e Reggio-Emilia (2013), Universitat autonoma de Barcelona (2014), and Université de Lausanne (2016). Member in the examining boards for the appointment of associate professors (Università di Padova, 2006) and university researchers (Università della Calabria, 1999; Università di Messina, 2001; Università di Padova, 2006).
Co-Chairman (General Paleontology) at the 32° International Geological Congress (Firenze, 2004).

His main scientific interests focus on:
- systematics, paleobiogeography, and paleoecology of Late Cretaceous Miocene Neo-Tethyan larger foraminifera;
- biostratigraphy and paleoenvironmental analysis of Paleogene carbonate deposits;
- systematics and ecology of recent benthic foraminifera, with special reference to the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean domains;
- systematics of Mesozoic aulacocerid coleoid cephalopods;
- large-scale trends in the fossil record.
