Nato a Viterbo, Gianluca Canettieri si è laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia nel 1995 presso l’Università “La Sapienza” di Roma, dove ha poi svolto il dottorato di ricerca in Endocrinologia e Malattie metaboliche.
È stato visiting fellow presso la Johns Hopkins University di Baltimora (1996) e, successivamente, post doctoral fellow presso il Salk Institute for Biological Studies di San Diego (2000-2005), acquisendo competenze nell’ambito delle alterazioni trascrizionali ed epigenetiche legate allo sviluppo di malattie metaboliche, tumorali e genetiche.
È tornato in Italia nel 2005 grazie al programma ministeriale “Rientro dei Cervelli”, entrando nel 2008 nel ruolo universitario di professore associato.
Dal 2019 è professore ordinario di patologia generale presso l’Università “La Sapienza” di Roma.
E' membro del Collegio dei Docenti del Dottorato in Medicina Molecolare.
Dirige l’Unità di Epigenetica, Metabolismo e Cancro del Dipartimento di Medicina Molecolare.
Fa parte del Comitato Tecnico-Scientifico AIRC.
È tesoriere della Società Italiana di Patologia e Medicina Traslazionale (SIPMeT).
È Vicepresidente del collegio dei professori ordinari del SSD MEDS-02/A.
È stato Chair delle Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) on Polyamines, Waterville Valley NH, USA nel 2023.
Oltre agli interessi in ambito oncologico, i suoi studi sono focalizzati su patologie genetiche e dismetaboliche.
