TERMOIDRAULICA BIFASE (FONDAMENTI - APPLICAZIONI) (2023-2024, 1° semestre)

Il corso è suddiviso in due moduli.

Il modulo Fondamenti di Termoidraulica Bifase (6 CFU - obbligatorio per tutti i curricula) tratterà tutti gli aspetti teorici della disciplina, con semplici applicazioni numeriche per consentire di migliorare la comprensione degli stessi.

Il modulo Applicazioni di Termoidraulica Bifase (3 CFU - obbligatorio per gli studenti del curriculum "Scienze e Tecnologie Nucleari", possibile come tirocinio da 3 CFU per tutti gli altri studenti) presenterà applicazioni e strumenti di calcolo più complessi per l'analisi dei sistemi bifase. All'interno del corso ci sarà anche una introduzione all'uso di livello "intermedio" di EXCEL.

Curriculum

Gianfranco Caruso got the Master Degree in Nuclear Engineering (1984) and PhD in Energy Engineering (1989) with a thesis on “Nuclear Severe Accidents and mitigation systems”. Postgraduate certificate in Industrial Safety and Protection (1992).
Lecturer in Nuclear Plants from 1986 to 2000, he was Adjunct Professor (2000-2006) and then Assistant Professor (2006-2011) in Thermal Sciences and Building Physics at the Faculty of Architecture, and in Nuclear Engineering (2011-2017) at the Faculty of Civil and industrial Engineering, of Sapienza, University of Rome. Associate professor in Nuclear engineering from January 2018.
Actually, he is Associate Professor in Nuclear Engineering (2018).
He is habilitated by the Italian National Scientific Habilitation as Full Professor (2017) in Thermal sciences, energy technology, building physics and Nuclear Engineering.

He is currently Scientific Responsible of the Thermal-Hydraulics and Numerical Simulation laboratories, Coordinator of the Nuclear Section and member of the Executive Committee and of the Research Quality Committee of DIAEE (Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energy Engineering) – Sapienza, University of Rome.
Gianfranco Caruso is Liaison Officer of the OECD-NEA Data Bank for the DIAEE.
He is Representative Member of Sapienza in the Governing Board of CIRTEN (Consorzio Interuniversitario per la Ricerca Tecnologica Nucleare).

Teaching activity:
2nd level Courses on “Nuclear Plants”, “Advanced Heat and Mass Transfer”, Fusion Reactor Technology” and “Numerical Simulation of Nuclear Systems”.

Publications:
Author of more than 170 scientific publications in international (56) and national (17) Journals, international (42) and national (56) Conferences in the field of nuclear energy and technology, heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics and about 60 technical reports. He is author of 3 educational books and 4 chapters in Manuals.
He is reviewer for several scientific journals in the field of energy, nuclear engineering, heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics: Int. J. of Heat and Mass Transfer (ISSN 0017‐9310), Int. Research activities:
From 1984 he acquired particular expertise in the following topics, mostly well documented by scientific publications: advanced heat transfer and thermal-hydraulics in fission and fusion nuclear plants; alternative energy and energy saving; air heating and conditioning; two-phases heat transfer and flow; design of components and systems for energy production plants; studies on physical properties of fluids; heat exchange equipments; thermodynamic cycles of nuclear power plants; nuclear safety in fission and fusion plants.
He participated as researcher to several national (PRIN, FIRB) and international projects (since the 4th EU FWP).
From 1994 to 2005 participated, in collaboration with ENEA-FUS, in the activities of the Euratom Fusion Technical Program in the framework of the European Fusion Development Agreement, concerning the validation of computer codes for the simulation of accidents in fusion reactors, contributing to the development and use of the CONSEN program, participating in international Benchmark and Standard Problems.
Actually he is group leader in two ongoing projects (ESNII+ in the 7th EU FWP and SESAME in the H2020 EU FWP) and scientific responsible of the research activities at Sapienza (Linked Third Party of ENEA) in the EUROFUSION Consortium (H2020 Action - Grant Agreement 633053).

Memberships:
Member of the Scientific Council of International Center of Heat and Mass Transfer (ICHMT). Member of UIT (Italian Union of Thermal-Hydraulics). Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Gianfranco Caruso is in the Editorial Board of the journal "Latin American Applied Research (LAAR)" - ISSN: 0327-0793 - for the subject "Heat and Mass Transfer".

Awards:
In 2003, he was awarded of the Prize “Le Scienze” – IV Ed. - as Young Researcher in Nuclear Engineering.
