ABOUT THE COURSE

The Advanced English Lab is designed for students with an intermediate to advanced level of English.

Ideally you should be at B2, but a B1+ paired with a hearty dose of good will and sustained effort can also lead to success in the course.

The attached document called 'What your level of English on entry should be' explains:

a. what is expected of you in terms of English language competence;

b. how you can audit your skills in English using the CEFR grid.

You will also find advice on resources you can use before the course starts in semester 2, should you feel that you need to strengthen certain areas and improve specific skills.

ABOUT THE EXAM

The exam is the analysis and discussion of a project on a topic chosen by the students and related to their area of study. It has two elements.

1. WRITTEN: this consists of an abstract (highlighting the core points of the project) and a methodology section (detailing how the presentation has developed: how you selected your sources, what was your initial hypothesis, how the process of preparing the presentation evolved, how you analysed the data etc). The written part has to be submitted via Classroom no later than 12 noon of the day before the oral exam.

2. ORAL: this can be LANGUAGE BASED or RESEARCH BASED:

a. Students opting to do a Language based project will present the analysis of a small selection of articles (newspaper, academic, multimedia) on a topic related to their area of study, from a linguistic perspective - comparing and contrasting style of language, register, tone, rhetorical strategies, visual features;

b. Students opting to do a Research based project will choose a topic, formulate a research question and present their findings in the oral exam.

STUDENTS NOT ATTENDING THE COURSE (NON FREQUENTANTI) will have to have their project proposal approved by me beforehand.
