Curriculum
I am Full Professor (INFO/01) at the Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Computer Science. I have been Assistant Professor in the same Department from 2001 to 2015, and Associate Professor from 2015 to 2022.
I graduated in Computer Science on 14/07/1988 at University of Salerno, Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, with a score of 110/110 cum laude. The title of my dissertation was: "Structures and visual languages." In the thesis various approaches to image segmentation were analyzed, with particular reference to techniques of structural type.
My research concerns the study of Biometric systems (face, iris, multibiometric systems), Pattern Recognition, Image Processing, and Human-Machine Interaction, particularly issues of accessibility and e-learning. Biometric Interaction is the crossing point of all these disciplines.
I am co-Editor in Chief of Pattern Recognition Letters by Elsevier (formerly Associate Editor from 2015 and Area Editor up to 2019)
I have been Area Editor of IEEE Biometrics Compendium (online) created by IEEE Biometrics Council
I have been Editor in Chief from 2018 to 2022 of IEEE Biometrics Newsletter (formerly member of the Editorial Board)
I have Vice-President from 2018 to 2021 of IEEE ISBCC BIO46 Italy Chapter - IEEE Italy Section Biometrics Council Chapter
I coordinated the following research activities:
Work Package WP5 - Standards for e-learning in the EU project QUIS, QUality, Interoperability and Standards in e-learning (e-learning Project, starting Feb 2005)
Rome Unit for the project FIRB 2009 "E-learning, deafness, written language, a bridge of letters and signs for the knowledge society", code RBNE074T5L
University Project 2010 "Icara: using a mobile information system with functions of Context Aware Augmented Reality"
University Project 2011 "Moving Icara"
I have coordinated the Rome Unit for the project PRIN 2015 COSMOS, coordinated by University of Salerno
I have coordinated the University Project 2017 "Biometric Walk Recognizer: Recognizing people from recorded gait signal"
I was supervisor of the PHD students in Computer Science Fabrizio Borgia (27 ° cycle, in co-tutoring with Prof. Patrice Dalle from the University Paul Sabatier - Tolouse III) and Daniele Cipriani (28° cycle), Alessio Mecca and Bodor Almubaddel (31-st cycle)
I coillaborate with BIPLab at University of Salerno.
I have been co-Program Chair of the conference and co-editor of the Proceedings of International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods (ICPRAM) since the 2013 edition. From 2026 I will be co-General Chair
I have been/am a member of the Program Commitee of many international conferences
I have been a Member of the organization of several international conferences
I am Senior Member of IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), Member of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), CVPL (Associazione Italiana per la ricerca in Computer Vision,
Pattern recognition e machine Learning - formerly GIRPR - Italian Group of Researchers in Pattern Recognition), INSTICC (Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication )
I presently teach "Basi di Dati - Modulo 1" (B.Sc. in Computer Science), and Biometric Systems (M.Sc. in Cybersecurity and M.Sc. in Computer Science)
