RESEARCH INTERESTS

In the first years of her scientific activity, R. M. was involved in the molecular biology of DNA tumor viruses, focusing her research on two main aspects of the interplay between Polyomavirus and cell differentiation. The first one is the regulation of viral gene expression during host cell differentiation, as a mean to probe the cellular modifications responsible for the establishment and the maintenance of the differentiated state. Through this research she gained expertise with several differentiating cell systems, with particular regard to neuronal and muscle differentiation, and also learned about the transcriptional regulation of gene expression. The second aspect concerns the interference of viral and cellular oncogenes with cell proliferation and differentiation. This subject allowed her to gain experience in the field of oncogenes, oncosuppressors, cell cycle, cell immortalisation and transformation.
Subsequently, she was mainly involved in the subject of the complex interplay between terminal differentiation and growth arrest pathways, in particular on the role and the regulation of the cdk inhibitors p21 and p57 during muscle differentiation and on the apoptotic mechanisms resulting from conflicting signals to cell cycle progression and cell cycle withdrawal.
Currently, she is focusing her attention on the role of epigenetic factors, such as DNA methylation, Poly(ADP-ribosylation and chromatin rearrangements, in the transcriptional regulation of genes involved in muscle differentiation and in cell cycle re-entry of quiescent cells.
