Course objectives
Students must acquire knowledge of basic laboratory techniques and instruments. They must know the pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical process, sample acceptance and non-compliance. They must know the HIS and LIS information systems.

Course program
- Structure and organization of the laboratory: operational areas, functions, and professional roles.
- Workflow of the biological sample: from collection to reporting.
- Introduction to the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases.
- Technical documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Role and responsibilities of the Biomedical Laboratory Technician.
- Training on safety in biomedical laboratories.
- Identification and prevention of biological, chemical, and physical risks.
- Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Hygiene, cleaning, and disinfection standards for laboratory workstations.
- Procedures for the disposal of special waste and infectious materials.
- Principles of quality management systems applied to biomedical laboratories (ISO 9001, ISO 15189).
- Concepts of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP): traceability, reproducibility, accuracy, precision.
- Importance of standardizing laboratory procedures and documentation.
- Introduction to internal and external quality controls and their role in ensuring result reliability.
Prerequisites
To access the examination, the student must have acquired the basic theoretical and practical knowledge provided during the initial phase of the study program.
In particular, the student should:
- Possess fundamental knowledge of biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and general pathology.
- Understand the basic concepts of laboratory practice, including the organization and role of the biomedical laboratory.
- Have completed the mandatory safety training, including the management of biological, chemical, and physical risks, and know the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Apply hygiene and biosafety regulations, ensuring the safe handling of biological materials.
These prerequisites ensure that the student can approach the internship experience safely, consciously, and with the essential foundational skills required for laboratory work.
