Course program
The student must demonstrate the following knowledge and skills:
-perform social, antiseptic, surgical handwashing
-dispose of hospital waste correctly
-know and apply the principles of environmental hygiene management
-decontaminate, wash, disinfect, package and sterilise medical equipment
-prepare the sterile field
-know the correct use of DIP , procedures to be implemented in case of contact with biological liquids and isolation procedures (L. 81/2008)
-accept and welcome the patient on scheduled admission
-perform complete hygiene of the bedridden patient (eyes, nose, ears, hair, beard trimming, perineal hygiene, genital hygiene, care of nail tips, care of the oral cavity)
-take antiseptic baths and showers
-keep the bed empty and occupied with simple and complex patient types
-make the bed at the discharge of the patient
-perform simple surgical dressing of healing wounds by first intention
-perform simple bandaging and dressing (excluding therapeutic)
- pressure injuries (prevention and treatment)
-know and use pain, pressure injury risk, fall risk assessment scales
-fall prevention and restraint systems
-implement patient walking assistance techniques
-use aids for patient walking
-perform mobilisation and positioning of the patient in bed and in a wheelchair
-perform simple active and passive mobilisation exercises
-carry out correct patient transfer techniques (to the edge and to the headboard)
-implement bed-stretcher-wheelchair transfer techniques
-carry out and manage patient transport on a stretcher, in a wheelchair and assist the patient in ambulation
-prepare the patient for a meal
-execute correctly the techniques of administering meals to the low-complexity patient
-know the types of dietary restrictions
-Administer artificial nutrition
-Detect weight and height for the purpose of BMI calculations
-use and manage appropriate aids for urinary and faecal incontinence
-Apply diuresis monitoring techniques
-Recognise changes in diuresis and micturition
-monitor elimination
-perform and manage trans urethral bladder catheterisation in women
-Recognise changes in diuresis and micturition

-perform measurement of basic cardiovascular and respiratory parameters (blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate, saturation with saturated metre)
-administering aerosol therapy to the patient
-supervise the patient during oxygen therapy
-Carry out capillary blood sampling
-Collect, store and transfer urine, faeces, sputum samples for examination
-Collect specimens for diagnostic examinations (physico-chemical, cytological, histological)
-carry out and read urine stick examination (including glycosuria determination)
-determination of blood glucose using a glucometer on capillary blood sample
-recognise the main characteristics of excretions and secretions
-use the main computer aids in use in the operating units (acceptance, transfer, patient discharge., pharmacy requests, stock etc.)
-plan, in relation to the identified priority nursing diagnoses, the appropriate interventions and procedures.
Prerequisites
Before the placement can take place, the student must complete the compulsory safety course and the 30-hour vocational workshop (1 CFU)
In order to be admitted to take the internship exam it is mandatory to carry out at least 450 hours of professional practice with positive outcomes
The clinical internship is generally divided into 3 internships at medical basic surgical departments, chosen based on previous experience and training needs of the student

Exam mode
The written test consists of the administration of 30 multiple-choice items (each task is customised through Sapienza's Mesiv service) based on clinical skills: identification of care problems, priorities, identification/choice of interventions and evaluation of their effectiveness.
The oral test assesses the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of the scientific content, as well as judgement in relation to the proposed care and organisational situations of low care complexity; it assesses relational ability; terminological appropriateness.
The practical test consists of describing/performing or simulating procedures in safety for the patient and for the operator; identification and description of the equipment required.

Lessons in a simulation classroom for laboratory activities equipped with dummy and consumables.and small group exercises
Lectures in a classroom equipped with a blackboard and projector for presenting slides and films.
