Introduction to the discipline. Definition of hygiene; concepts of health and disease. Determinants of health/disease; epidemiological triad.
Natural history of disease. Disease prevention: health promotion/protection. Levels of prevention: primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Host-parasite relationship: contagion, infection, disease. Modes of transmission of infectious diseases: sexual/parenteral, airborne, fecal-oral; zoonoses. Parasitosis.
Disinfection, sterilization, disinfestation.
Immune prophylaxis of infectious diseases: serums and vaccines. Vaccination strategy. National Vaccine Prevention Plan.
Food hygiene: infections, food-borne infections, food poisoning. Food safety: self-monitoring standards (HACCP).
Emerging pathogens (Legionella pneumophila; Escherichia coli O157:H7) and re-emerging. Opportunistic infections. Hospital-acquired infections.
Epidemiology and prevention of major chronic-degenerative diseases. Secondary prevention (early diagnosis) of cancer: screening tests.
Health education: methodologies for implementing health promotion programs (relationship between individual behavior and health); Ottawa Charter.
European Code Against Cancer. Tobacco smoking: health effects. Dietary habits and physical activity: risk and protective factors.
