Course program
The program includes the study of general microbiology that provides the fundamental notions on the structure, replication, pathogenesis, and control of infections caused by bacteria, fungi, and viruses. History of microbiology and its applications. General information on microorganisms, differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Structures and bacterial replication, growth kinetics. Notes on taxonomy. Gram-positive and Gram-negative. Host-parasite interaction in the infectious process. Reservoirs and sources of infection: the main transmission routes of infectious agents. The human microbiota. Pathogenicity, virulence factors, toxicity, and invasiveness. Phases of pathogenesis. Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. Vaccines. Yeast-forming fungi, filamentous fungi, dimorphic fungi: notes on the main pathogenic species for humans. Introduction to virology. Structure, classification, and viral replication and pathogenesis. Healthcare-associated infections (HAI).
Prerequisites
Even if there are no specific preparatory requirements, for a good understanding of the topics covered during the course and to achieve the learning objectives, it is strongly recommended that the student know the topics covered in Biology.

Frequency
The attendance certificate, recorded with a signature in the presence, for the mandatory teaching activities of the Degree Course is necessary for the student to take the relevant exam.
Exam mode
To pass the exam, a grade of not less than 18/30 must be achieved in each module.
Lesson mode
Frontal teaching lessons will be held using a video projector. Or if required, remote lessons. Additional didactic material will be made available to the student.
