Course program
Course Title Nursing Care in Pediatric Surgery: Theoretical and Practical Approach Course Aim To provide specific knowledge and skills in pediatric surgical nursing care, with particular focus on the pre-, intra-, and post-operative management of pediatric patients, the most common neonatal and pediatric surgical conditions, and the active role of the nurse in the operating room setting. Program Structure Module 1 – Safety in the Operating Room: The Surgical Safety Checklist Introduction to surgical safety based on WHO guidelines Pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative checklists The nurse’s role in checklist implementation Pre- and post-operative nursing care Family support and communication strategies Monitoring of vital signs and post-surgical complications Case study discussions and preventable errors Module 2 – Congenital Neonatal Malformations and Nursing Management of the Following Conditions: Esophageal atresia Hypertrophic pyloric stenosis Intestinal obstructions Anorectal malformations Module 3 – Management of Abdominal Wall Defects (omphalocele, gastroschisis) Prenatal diagnosis and surgical newborn management Pre-operative preparation and post-operative care Pain, wound, and medical device management Stoma management Module 4 – Pediatric Urology Triage of the main pediatric surgical emergencies Module 5. Practical internship in the pediatric operating room
Prerequisites
A solid understanding of Human Anatomy (mandatory requirement) A solid understanding of Pathophysiology (mandatory requirement) Basic knowledge of Pediatrics (recommended)
Frequency
Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class. The attendance requirement will be considered fulfilled if at least 75% of the scheduled class hours are attended.
Exam mode
The exam will consist of an oral interview, during which the main topics covered in the theoretical and practical lessons will be discussed. The assessment will focus on the understanding of the subjects, the ability to apply the acquired knowledge, and the clarity and quality of the responses.
Lesson mode
Within the integrated course, the pediatric surgical nursing module will primarily be delivered through lectures, complemented by practical activities in the operating room.
