Knowledge of the main causes of disease and related etiopathogenetic mechanisms. Fundamental physiopathological mechanisms of the main apparatuses and systems. Main pathogenic microorganisms for humans and host defense mechanisms. Methodology of the main laboratory, chemical-clinical, histological, hematological and microbiological analyses.

Introduction to Microbiology
BACTERIOLOGY
Morphology, physiology, and reproduction of the bacterial cell. – Virulence factors and antimicrobial agents. Antibiotic resistance.
Main clinically relevant bacteria.
VIROLOGY
General characteristics of viruses. – Pandemic RNA viruses. – DNA viruses.
MYCOLOGY
General characteristics of fungi. Yeasts and molds (Candida and Aspergillus) – Mycoses. Candida.
DIAGNOSIS
Direct and indirect diagnosis.
VACCINES
Development of antibacterial and antiviral vaccines. The anti-vax movement: vaccine hesitancy and fake news.
