During the three-year period, the student acquires specialist knowledge by choosing from those provided by the course teachers. - The student acquires specialized knowledge on diseases and dysfunctions of medical and surgical interest.

Course program
The Elective Educational Activities (ADE) include six seminars whose programs are described below. Thyroid pathologies (Teacher Prof. Salvatore Ulisse, 1 CFU - 12 hours) Overview of the pathophysiology of the thyroid gland and regulation of the hypothalamus-hypophysis-thyroid axis. Pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy of hypothyroidism. Iodine deficiency disorders. Pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapy of hyperthyroidism. Risk factors associated with the onset of thyroid neoplasms (ionizing radiation, familiarity, iodine intake, etc.). Overview of the molecular pathogenesis of thyroid tumors. Main biochemical, genetic and instrumental diagnostic pathways used in the diagnosis of thyroid carcinomas. Staging systems and prognosis of patients affected by thyroid neoplasms. Infertility and assisted reproduction methods (Teacher Prof. Enke Baldini, 1 CFU - 12 hours) Basics of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. Reminders of the physiology of the male and female gonads. Infertility and sterility: definitions and epidemiology. Causes of male infertility. Causes of female infertility. Causes common to both sexes. PMA techniques. Artificial insemination. IVF. GIFT. Additional techniques (ICSI, PICSI, IMSI, pre-implantation diagnosis, fertility preservation). Sperm collection and preparation. Main diagnostic tests performed on sperm. Notes on PMA legislation. Genomics and the Nurse: Applications in Professional Practice (Teacher Prof. Samantha Cialfi, 1 CFU – 12 hours) Genes and the role of mutations in disease onset. Genetic screening for diagnosis and predisposition to disease. Personalized therapies: 1. Genomic editing: the CRISPR/Cas9 system and examples of beta-thalassemia and sickle cell anemia; 2. Correction of the basic defect: corrector drugs and modulators of protein functions and the example of cystic fibrosis. Oncological Surgery (Professor Mariarita Tarallo, 2 CFU, 24 hours) Approach to the oncologic surgical patient: preoperative evaluation and management of informed consent. Surgical and multidisciplinary management of colorectal, gastroesophageal, endocrine, and breast neoplasms. Postoperative care: monitoring, pain management, and prevention of complications. Minimally invasive and robotic surgery: innovations and clinical applications in oncologic surgery. Nursing Research Methodology (Professor Azzurra Massimi, 1 credit, 12 hours) Quantitative Research - Planning a research study; identifying the appropriate quantitative design; variables and hypotheses; sampling and data collection with questionnaires, scales, and measurement tools; validity and reliability, association and outcome measures. Qualitative Research - Qualitative designs and methods (phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, case studies); data collection techniques (interviews, focus groups, observation); data analysis and rigor criteria; integration of findings (mixed methods). Literature Reviews and Bibliographic Search - Types of Literature Reviews; defining the research question (PICO); constructing the search string; PubMed exercise for identifying and selecting evidence.
Prerequisites
It is important that the student has knowledge of biology, genetics, histology, anatomy and physiology of the main organs and systems of the human body.

Frequency
In order to be able to take the exam related to the specific integrated course it is necessary to have documented the presence in the classroom of at least 67% of the hours corresponding to the credits assigned to the integrated course.
Exam mode
To pass an ADE the student need to obtain a qualification. The student must demonstrate to have acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in class, and to be able to expose them in a clear way with language property.

Major surgeries: appendectomy, cholecystectomy, hernioplasty, etc. Postoperative management: monitoring, pain management and complication prevention. Emergency surgery: immediate approaches and trauma management. Oncologic surgery: principles and major treatments. Minimally invasive and robotic surgery: innovations and clinical applications.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Skills in general pathology and pharmacology. Ability to work in a team and follow clinical protocols.
