Developmental Psychology

Course objectives

This course aims at familiarizing the students with the themes and methods of developmental psychology. At the end of the course students will know the “normative frames” of development.The particular methodological tools that characterise the field of developmental psychology will be examined. Conoscenza e capacità di comprensione (knowledge and understanding). Students will know normative frames related to cognitive, social and emotional development, and methods of developmental research. Students will also have a basic knowledge and understanding of different research methods in developmental psychology. At the end of the course students will be able to recognize normative frames, developmental tasks challenges and resources in analyzing a “case”. Students will also be able to recognize different research methods in developmental psychology Autonomia di giudizio (making judgements). Class discussions will allow students to learn how to comment a case making reference to psychological theories and to contextualize the case in the environment. Abilità comunicative (communication skills). Trough discussions in class, students will learn how communicate using specific terminology of developmental psychology. Capacità di apprendimento (learning skills). Recall to sources will allow students to learn how to study in deep topics of developmental psychology, above all by using appropriate key words. At the end of the course students should be able to find and use bibliographic and sitographic tools in order to constantly update and deepen professional knowledge and skills.

Program - Frequency - Exams

Course program
First part of the course will be focused on normative frames. Some lessons could be spend in discussing cases. Part of the course will be focused on the study of different research methods in developmental psychology. The main research design and research methods in developmental psychology will be presented. It will also be possible to work in small groups on national and international scientific papers that illustrate different research methodologies (and deepen the topics addressed in the first part of the course) and which will include presentation in the classroom to encourage group discussion.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites because this is an introductive course.

Exam mode
Aim of the exam is to evaluate students knowledge of theories and communicative skills in writing communication. Written test with multiple choice questions and open ended questions. Students can obtain, an evaluation of 30 points. To pass the exam, students must in any case demonstrate that they have reached a sufficient level of preparation both on theoriesand on methods.
Lesson mode
Lessons supported by power point slides to teach theories. Exercises about methods and other group activities and discussions to favour the ability to apply knowledge to practice. During classes, explanations will be alternated with moments in which students will be actively engaged in discussion through presentation and discussion of research manuscripts.
