Educational objectives The Integrated Laboratory of Book Design and Typography Studio aims to provide theoretical-critical, design and technical tools to allow the student to tackle the project of complex artefacts and systems of artefacts in the field of Visual Communication based on one of its founding elements: the typography. The laboratory therefore intends to provide the tools for a conscious use of the typeface in the design of different types of artefact in the editorial field. These tools include knowledge of the anatomy of the character and the related changes in reference to historical and technological contexts; topics such as information architecture will also be explored through the correct use of typefaces, microtypography and the use of characters in an expressive key. Finally, the integrated use of typography with the other elements of graphic design will be discussed. At the end of the workshop, the student must have acquired knowledge and skills that allow the design of both a typeface and an editorial design artifact, from concept to realization, with particular attention to the printing and preparation phase of the designed product. The Laboratory consists of a "Book Design and Typography Studio" module, with a strong design component in the field of editorial design; and a module of "History of Visual Design" which aims to provide the historical and critical basis of graphic design. These skills will be verified within the project activities, through exercises, and through the final test, which will be used to verify both the progress in the production of the artifacts and the theoretical preparation starting from the reference bibliography.

Educational objectives The specific objective of the course is to allow students to acquire the theoretical-critical knowledge for a correct approach to the production of images in the context of contemporary visual culture.
In this framework, the topics covered by the course examine a varied set of experiences and applications attributable to the production of images that can be expressed through the expression Graphic Sciences. To this end, the suffix "-gràfiche" is adopted to indicate the nature of the topics on which to focus attention and the sphere of belonging of the topics proposed for study and further study. The suffix "-gràfiche" is declined according to plural meanings and multiple languages through the articulation in four focuses: -graphics for communication, -graphics for visualization, -graphics for description, -graphics for narration.
The course is divided into lectures, seminars and micro-exercises prepared in relation to the various historical-theoretical, methodological, technical and operational topics. The main topics covered in the lessons are: the origins of modern visual culture (from the 17th-18th century to the first half of the 19th century); the first half of the twentieth century: the formation of the concept of visual culture and the related experiments; the end of the twentieth century: the consolidation of research in the field of visual culture, the science of images and the "iconic turn"; the 2000s: the pervasive diffusion of images; the fundamental questions of visual culture: eye and gaze; realism, effect of reality and fiction; the image as a picture: materials and supports, devices and media.
At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate that he is able to understand the images and practices of seeing as cultural products historically and technically "situated" in the cultural context of reference; knowing how to analyze images and practices of seeing the formal, material, technological and social aspects; knowing how to use graphic languages in the different fields of application and in the possible different expressions; knowing how to use graphic languages for the communication of ideas, images, data, information, concepts and projects; knowing how to exercise and experiment with visual culture in the context of a visual and multimedia communication project.
During the exam, learning will be verified on the set of exercises produced and on the effective knowledge and mastery of the main topics covered and addressed during the course.

Educational objectives Specific objectives:
The Laboratory intends to provide critical analysis skills to visual language, drawing on the principles of semiotics and sociology of communication for a theoretical and conceptual framework, and also a laboratory study of photography as an expressive and cultural medium. These objectives are carried out through two modules: Photography (L-ART / 06) and Methods of critical image analysis (SPS-08) within the framework of the Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes discipline.
PHOTOGRAPHY (L-ART/06) – 6 CFU
Specific objectives: The course is divided into lectures dedicated to outlining the main historical, theoretical, aesthetic, technical and design problems connected to photography, and laboratory meetings aimed at defining a photographic idea and developing it in its design lines, verifying its feasibility, possible areas of application, the results. Through the comparison between different methodological perspectives, a series of central problems in modern historiography and photographic theory will be treated (relating for example to the evolution over time of visual genres, to the effects of the digital revolution, to the related transformations in social practices and production methods. ). With the help of examples and case studies (reportages and thematic photographic books, serial system research, experimental projects, communication campaigns, installations), students will be asked to conceive, design, implement (with one or more coherently applied techniques) and edit a photographic sequence. The sequence must be introduced by a short explanatory text (statement) and accompanied by any equipment (such as captions, maps, layout models, layout schemes or other - for example archives, databases, etc.). Particular emphasis will be given to recurring methods in contemporary photography (for example the use of iconographic palimpsests, the anthropological method and the relational approach, the use of maps, social platforms, georeferenced systems or other forms of research and sharing of images on the web), as well as themes and problems typical of documentary and experimental photography (research on social identity, cultural memory, urban and environmental context, landscape changes; research on language, media, visuality ; forms of appropriation and remake applied in different visual fields, etc.). The exam will focus on knowledge of the bibliographic material (to be agreed with the teacher) and on the presentation of personal photographic research. Of this, the design methods must be justified (also according to the theoretical topics detailed in the bibliography), the editing and the equipment attached to the images.
METHODS FOR IMAGE’S CRITICAL EVALUATION (SPS-08) - 3 CFU
Specific objectives: Methods for critical image analysis is a thematic area of the Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes (SPS 08) and is based on the deepening of the principles, tools and methods of the social sciences, usable for a semantic and syntactic critical analysis of 'image. This teaching can take two main orientations:
- Identify yourself with visual literacy or with an education in visual communication, from which to develop transversal skills of critical thinking, user awareness and creative production of audiovisual content. This type of reflection inevitably considers the contributions and forms of theoretical contamination coming from the studies of semiotics, linguistics and hermeneutics, especially as regards the development of critical thinking, while it recalls more generally some specific aspects of the Sciences of Communication, especially as regards it concerns the functioning of the cultural industry system, as well as the process underlying the production of a visual and audiovisual text.
- Emphasize the methodological-instrumental perspective of Visual Education, transferring critical and operational tools to students to start image analysis and storytelling processes through specific qualitative and quantitative tools, as well as to write a visual narrative in compliance with the fundamental principles underlying the its effectiveness and communicative quality.
At the end of the course, the student must have acquired knowledge and understanding skills, as well as skills that allow them to support, from a theoretical and methodological point of view, the implementation of image analysis projects. Furthermore, the student must have acquired adequate and specific knowledge about the definitions, the key concepts, the principles underlying the visual language and storytelling, as well as the analog and digital tools, procedures and methods referring to the aspects of the analysis of image through the use of standard and non-standard procedures.

| 10616103 | INFORMATION DESIGN STUDIO [SPS/08, ICAR/13] [ENG] | 2nd | 1st | 9 |
Educational objectives Specific objectives: Information Design Studio stands as an interdisciplinary teaching between Information Design - pertaining to the discipline of Visual and Multimedia Communication Design - and Visual Storytelling - pertaining to the discipline of Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes. The synergy between the two courses aims to deepen the theme of approaching data from a communicative and narrative point of view, focusing on the importance of Data Literacy, understood as "the ability to collect, manage, evaluate and apply data in a critical manner" (Ridsdale et al., 2015, p. 2). In what is, to date, referred to as the 'information society' (Cosenza, 2012), one of the main issues that the disciplines have to deal with transversally is that of the production and management of large amounts of data and metadata. In this regard, the specific branch of the Visual Communication Design discipline, such as Information Design, deals with the analysis, organization and visual representation of large data sets, within a situated communicative process, in which the graphic expressive choices of the visual synthesis respond to specific communicative objectives and adapt to the socio-cultural characteristics of the reference publics. In this sense, Information Design and Visual Storytelling make it possible, synergically, to rework very numerous and complex information by applying the semantic and syntactic rules of visual communication in order to make it accessible through a communicative meta-project. These modes constitute, in fact, a systemic approach to systematizing, organizing and interpreting the complexity of data and processes, based on the coding of specific visual languages and hierarchical narrative structures that simultaneously become tools for external communication (mapping and visual outcomes for communication purposes) and internal communication (mapping and visual outcomes for design purposes).

| N/D | DATA VISUALIZATION [SPS/08] [ENG] | 2nd | 1st | 3 |
Educational objectives Specific objectives: the module deals primarily with the critical analysis and design of visual narratives from data and information, applying narrative models from the sociological tradition, such as the circular structure of the hero's journey (Campbell, 1984) and Vogler, 1999), characterization of characters through the archetypes and fundamental psychological types of narration (Durand,1972; Jung, 1947; Pearson, 1990), as well as the firm heads of narrative, functions and structures (Barthes, 1966; Todorov,1969). Through this module, students will acquire knowledge and skills to carry out a critical analysis of visual narratives, including cross-media and transmedia narratives, and will be able to apply the rules underlying the content design of visual narratives when they have to visualize data or narrate them within an interpretative narrative structure. For this reason, the two modules of which the course is composed run in parallel to provide visual design skills in the field of Information Design, offering knowledge and skills for the research, conception and validation of complex infographic communication artefacts. These skills will be tested within the framework of experimental and project activities through the development of thematic and semester-long project work.
