LABORATORY OF INNOVATIVE DRUGS AND BIOTECHNOLOGICAL DRUGS WITH ANTICANCER ACTIVITY

Course objectives

General expected learning outcomes In the course in “Innovative and biotechnological drugs with anticancer activity” the students will be hosted for a few days in a pharmaceutical synthesis laboratory to assist in the conduct of a small molecule synthesis process, from the design of a chemical reaction to its implementation, monitoring and processing. The mixture of products obtained will then be separated by identifying the product/products present in greater quantity with chemical-physical methods and subsequently characterizing it/them again with chemical-physical methods. Specific expected learning outcomes 1. Knowledge and Understanding The student will know all the practical aspects of a chemical-pharmaceutical synthesis. Fundamental notions will concern the study of the preparation, monitoring and processing of a chemical reaction conducted in a research laboratory, followed by the chemical-physical characterization of the identified molecules. 2. Applying knowledge and understanding At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize the end of a synthetic chemical reaction, decide when to work it and decide the most appropriate method to separate the compounds obtained, to then characterize them with chemical-physical methods. 3. Making judgements The teacher will ask the students continuous questions to stimulate them and develop their critical sense. These questions will also serve to evaluate and encourage students to make connections with everything studied up to now, avoiding considering the study of the subject as an end in itself but integrating medicinal chemistry in the light of the knowledge already acquired, both chemical (chemistry organic, biochemical) and biological (pathology, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, toxicology). 4. Communication skills Students will be evaluated on a report (written test) which they will perform at the end of the period carried out in the research laboratory. The greater or lesser completeness of the report will give the measure of the score attributed. 5. Learning skills The student will find the deepening of what he heard in class on scientific articles recommended by the teacher.
