Clinical Scientific Methods II - INTERNAL MEDICINE

Course objectives

• Be able to identify the patient's anamnestic, antropometric, instrumental and laboratory data and methodologies to detect them; to be good at to understand these data from a pathophysiological point of view and use them for diagnosis and prognosis. Collect and evaluate epidemiological and statistical data for health promotion and disease prevention. • Be able to collect the patient's medical history and to compile the medical record as well as to perform clinical examination and know the basic diagnostic-therapeutic techniques. Learn the use of epidemiological data in order to formulate a correct diagnosis and prognosis. Use the statistical, probabilistic and informatic elements with a view to managing the uncertainty linked to the random nature of the medical process. • Be aware that the data collection must be used not only in order to formulate a correct diagnosis but also to establish an adequate relationship between patient and medical doctor.

Objectives of the frontal teaching activity • Data quality and characteristics of the diagnostic test: validity and reliability of the diagnostic test, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, prevalence. • the SnNout and SpPin rules • Likelihood ratios and odds. The ROC curve. • Fundamental study models in epidemiology: • Experimental studies (RCT): the phases of clinical trials: from phase I to phase IV • Critical elements of trials: internal validity and external validity • Measures of effect and estimates of their precision. • Notes on artificial intelligence in the biomedical field Objectives of the professionalizing teaching activity • Meaning of the main medical terms. • Role of epidemiology and statistics in the formulation of the diagnostic hypothesis. • Collection of medical history data and compilation of a medical record. • Use of the data collected to make the most probable diagnosis. • Performing an objective examination (physical exam) including: General physical exam of the patient, description in the medical record of the findings identified physical exam of the cardiovascular system and its general interpretation physical exam of the respiratory system and its general interpretation physical exam of the abdomen and its general interpretation Palpation of the lymph node stations • Learning of elementary diagnostic-therapeutic techniques: blood pressure measurement, preparation of infusions • Knowledge of the main diagnostic methods used in surgery and internal medicine. • Correct management of the doctor-patient relationship
Prerequisites
Knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology (acquired in previous semesters).
Frequency
Compulsory attendance, with assessment carried out on the occasion of each individual activity by the responsible teacher. The obligation to attend is considered fulfilled when 75% of attendance is reached.
Exam mode
Since this is an Integrated Course, the learning assessment will be carried out in a unitary and integrated manner by all teachers; the single module assesment will include an oral examination.
Lesson mode
The teacher delivers lectures with traditional methods with audiovisual aids and scheduling of lessons as reported on GOMP Aure/Orari system, published on the website of the course.
