To know the purpose, characteristics and limits of the main laboratory tests of clinical biochemistry and molecular biology. Interpretation of the main laboratory tests of clinical biochemistry and molecular biology, also related to specific diagnostic flowcharts.

Course program
Genera subjects. To know the application of the main methods of clinical biochemistry and molecular biology. To know the purpose, characteristics and limits of the main laboratory tests of clinical biochemistry and molecular biology. Interpretation of the main laboratory tests of clinical biochemistry and molecular biology, also related to specific diagnostic flowcharts. Specific subjects. Iron, protoporphyrin and globines: pathophysiology, clinical biochemistry and main methods of laboratory study. Anemias, classification and laboratory diagnostics. Iron deficiency anemia, porphyria, thalassemia and hemoglobinopathies. Hemochromocytometric examination: operative principles, examples of equipment, main parameters related to erythrocytes, leukocytes and platelets. Examples of alterations of the hemochromocytometric examination. Relationship between anemia and parameters of the hemochromocytometric test. Lipoproteins. Hemostasis.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of biology and biochemistry. Knowledge of the topics covered in the integrated course of laboratory medicine I.

Theoretical and applicative frontal lessons; professional practice; theoretical and practical elective and integrative activities.
Frequency
The attendance to theoretical and applicative frontal lessons and to trainings are mandatory. The attendance is checked by the teacher by using updated lists provided by the Academic Office that will be signed by the students. The certificate of attendance of the teaching course is required for the student to be admitted to the final test.
