Course program
Aim
The internship aims to provide future physicians with an integrated and practical understanding of pediatric surgery through direct observation and involvement in clinical and surgical activities. Particular emphasis will be placed on diagnostic assessment, therapeutic decision-making, and the multidisciplinary management of pediatric surgical patients. Students will be paired with medical tutors during clinical and surgical activities and will participate in the discussion of real clinical cases.
Specific Objectives
Deepen knowledge of the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways of the main pediatric surgical conditions
Understand the principles of pre-, intra-, and post-operative clinical management
Develop the ability to recognize pediatric surgical emergencies and contribute to their diagnostic assessment
Directly observe surgical activities and become familiar with the pediatric operating room environment
Internship Content
1. Pediatric Urology
Diagnosis and treatment of common urological conditions (e.g., phimosis, inguinal hernia, undescended testicle)
Surgical indications and operative techniques
Postoperative follow-up and management of complications
2. Neonatal Congenital Malformations
Early diagnostic evaluation and multidisciplinary approach
Conditions covered: esophageal atresia, gastroschisis, omphalocele, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, anorectal malformations
Principles of surgical newborn stabilization
Timing of surgery and care pathway
3. Pediatric Surgical Emergencies
Recognition of major surgical emergencies (appendicitis, intestinal intussusception, acute scrotum, intestinal obstructions)
Differential diagnosis and surgical planning
4. Observership in the Operating Room
Observation of major pediatric surgical procedures
Understanding of the organization and workflow of the operating room
Learning protocols of sterility and surgical safety
Prerequisites
A solid understanding of Human Anatomy (mandatory requirement)
A solid understanding of Pathophysiology (mandatory requirement)
Basic knowledge of Pediatrics (recommended)
Frequency
Attendance will be recorded at the beginning of each class. The attendance requirement will be considered fulfilled if at least 75% of the scheduled class hours are attended.
Exam mode
The evaluation will be based on the understanding and practical application of the main topics covered during the activities carried out in the ward and operating room.
Lesson mode
Ward activities, outpatient clinic, and observership in the operating room.
