CUTANEOUS AND VENEREAL DISEASES

Course objectives

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES During the lessons, students are provided with the necessary knowledge to adequately understand the function of the skin in both physiologic and pathologic conditions. By the end of the lessons, the student should be able to recognize primary, secondary and pathognomonic lesions. Furthermore, the student should be able to use appropriate scientific terminology specific to the field of dermato-venereology. SECONDARY OBJECTIVES At the end of the lessons the student should have acquired the necessary knowledge with which he/she will be able to make an early and accurate diagnosis of the most common diseases, lesions and disorders of the skin, cutaneous adnexa, semi-mucosae and mucosae, in all age groups. In addition, emphasis will be placed on the implementation of preventive and therapeutical measures in particular in the field of oncological dermatology, as well as in chronic inflammatory skin diseases and sexually transmitted diseases. The purpose of the dermatology course is to prepare the student, future physician, to apply the aquired knowledge in future clinical practice.

Course program
The programme includes: Anatomy and physiology of the skin, Elementary skin lesions. Definition, etiopathogenesis, clinical picture, diagnostic tools, diagnosis and differential diagnosis, prevention and therapeutic approach in the context of: Viral, bacterial, mycological and parasitic diseases, Sexually transmitted diseases, Chronic relapsing inflammatory diseases, Autoimmune diseases, Bullous diseases, Urticaria, Angioedema, Contact dermatitis, Connettivopathies, Diseases of the cutaneous adnexa, Alopecia, Keratinization disorders, Non melanoma skin cancer, Melanoma, Lymphomas
Prerequisites
Anatomy and histology of the skin. Immunology. Microbiology.

Frequency
Attendance is mandatory (MIN. 67%).
Exam mode
The examination is carried out as verbal exam, based on the topics of both Dermatovenereology (Skin and Venereal Diseases) and Plastic Surgery. During the examination, knowledge of the topics covered, the use of appropriate language and the use of technical/scientific terms are assessed. In addition, the student must know the definition of the pathology, the framing, the etiopathogenesis, the clinical description, the differential diagnosis and the therapy. The student must demonstrate logic in the resolution of the question and the correctness of the procedure identified to solve the problem. The final assessment, based on the above elements, consists of a mark decided unanimously by the examining commission. In order to pass the exam it is necessary to obtain a grade of not less than 18/30, demonstrating sufficient knowledge of the topics covered during the course. In order to obtain a grade of 30/30 with distinction, the student must demonstrate an excellent knowledge of the topics covered in the course with in-depth study of the literature recommended during the lectures.
