Objectives of the course
The aim of the course is to teach how to read, interpret, represent and design contemporary territories, with particular attention to the urban scale and to people meant as the main beneficiaries to whom the project is devoted.
Lesson contents by theme
The lessons are developed through theoretical and methodological insights and are illustrated with design references relating to predominantly contemporary and European experiences.
The sequence of topics includes three main themes:
1. The Urban analysis. The new places of the contemporary city. Territorial components and mobility. The perceptive survey. Types of public spaces.
2. The Concept. Participatory planning and the technique of the World Cafè. Maps of contemporary territories. The representation of the concept.
3. The Urban project. The Masterplan. The sustainable urban project. Urban regeneration of brownfield sites. Healthy and livable public spaces.
The project area: the former Fiera di Roma
The application part of the course includes a design exercise, divided into exercises and a laboratory, and accompanied by site inspections.
The study area is located within the GRA, along Via Cristoforo Colombo, near Piazza dei Navigatori. The purpose of the design exercise intends to prefigure an urban project aimed at the regeneration of the area, currently characterized by the presence of the abandoned pavilions of the ex-fair.
The choices for urban regeneration will be specified through a series of interventions aimed at the design of healthy and liveable public spaces, collective equipment, pedestrian, and cycle paths in a logic of enhancement of the area and connection with the surrounding cultural and landscape resources.
Prerequisites
To be admitted to Urbanistica exam the students must previously passed the Urban Technique exam.

The quality of the work carried out will be assessed on the basis of the drawings produced during the semester, with attention on the graphic quality and the completeness of the contents.
Exam mode
The exam consists in evaluating the work carried out, the design process completed, the verification of the training path achieved through the lessons and the study of the texts in the bibliography.
The oral test consists of an individual discussion of the theoretical issues presented during the lessons and explored in the texts in the bibliography, and in a group discussion on the work of the project. The final vote will be formulated according to three factors:
_ the results achieved during the semester;
_ the contents, the graphic quality of the documents, the communication skills and the critical analysis of the work performed;
_ theoretical preparation.
The vote for the graphic works will be attributed to:
_ the quality and relevance of the contents;
_ the graphic quality;
_ the presentation and organization of work.
