Course objectives

The training goals are: to provide to the students the conceptual cornerstones of river hydraulics and sediment transport and the mathematical models for their representation, both in one-dimensional and two-dimensional form.

Course program
Free surface flows. Uniform flows. Steady-state free surface flows. Unsteady free surface flows. The open channel flow equations. Integration of the unsteady flow governing equations in rectangular channels. Integration of the unsteady open channel flow equations. The method of characteristics. Flood flows. The kinematic wave model for flood propagation. The two-dimensional non-linear shallow water equations. Sediment transport. The three-dimensional suspended sediment concentration equation. Critical shear and Shields mobility parameter. Shields diagram. Reference concentration and actual concentration. The depth-averaged two-dimensional suspended sediment concentration equation.
Prerequisites
There is no any prerequisite for this course. For a better comprehension of the topics of the course, basic knowledge in mathematics and physics are required

Teaching mode
The course is taught in presence. In case the sanitary emergency persists, the lessons will be also online, by using Meet platform. Students can partecipate to the on-line lessons by sending an e-mail to the professor, in order to be included in the list of the partecipant that will be invited to the videocall in which the lesson will take place.
Frequency
Lectures and exercises are given in the classroom. Attendance to the class is recommended but not mandatory
Exam mode
The exam consists of an oral test on the contents indicated in the program.
