Course program
Elements for the design of nuclear reactor components and loops (nuclear, thermal fluid-dynamics and technological aspects) for LWRs, HTGRs, and Liquid Metal Cooled FBRs. Advanced trends of nuclear design and research on ageing damages for NPPs to prolong their work life in safety conditions. Nuclear and thermo-mechanical design of fuel rods and rods assemblies. Pressure vessels in steel and pre-stressed concrete, thermal shields and internals. Steam generators, condensers and cooling towers. Control, instrumentation and radiation protection. Safety principles for NPPs. Accidents evaluation in thermal LWRs and in sodium FBRs. Applications covers the thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena and analysis methods for conventional and nuclear power stations. Specific topics include: kinematics and dynamics of two-phase flows and systems; steam separation; boiling, instabilities, and critical conditions; single-channel transient analysis; multiple channels connected at plena; loop analysis including single and two-phase natural circulation; and subchannel analysis. An educational visit to the Borgo Sabotino nuclear site (CIRENE and Latina NPP) is organized at the end of the course.
