Course objectives

The aim of the course is to present some models for structural elements of common use in engineering, and to give the students (semi-)analytical solutions for successive comparisons with the results of numerical commercial codes.

Course program
Basics of finite elements. Beams on elastic foundation. Curved beams in two- and three-dimensional ambient space. Threads. Standard plane problems. Two-dimensional structural elements: slabs, plates, axisymmetric revolution shell under membrane stress.
Prerequisites
Mechanics of three-dimensional solids, mechanics of straight beams, linear elasticity, solution methods.
Books
Handouts by the teacher; excerpts from standard textbooks as S.P. Timoshenko, S. Woinowsky-Krieger, Theory of plates and shells, McGraw-Hill, 1959. A.C. Ugural, Plates and Shells: Theory and Analysis, Fourth Edition, CRC Press, 2017.
Teaching mode
Lectures both in presence and at a distance on the subjects described in the programme. Pattern exercises and group exercises, also with the support of computer algebra.
Frequency
Attending is optional; didactic material, especially for lectures both in presence and at a distance, is available at the web page giusepperuta.site.uniroma1.it and on the platforms provided by the university, Microsoft Teams and Google Classroom.
Exam mode
The final exam consists of the discussion of a theoretical-numerical work (either of the single or of a group) on the design of a theme of industrial engineering related to the subjects dealt with in the lectures.
Lesson mode
Lectures both in presence and at a distance on the subjects described in the programme. Pattern exercises and group exercises, also with the support of computer algebra.
