Course objectives

The course provides knowledge about the origin and control of defects in metal structures, from the manufacture of materials or processing technologiesFor their control are called the basic physical principles and applied methods: radiography, ultrasonic, penetrant liquid and magnetic methods.

Defect in foundry: calls on casting system, non- metallic inclusion, oxide film, expansion defects, gas defects, metal- form reactions, cavity of retirement, hot cracks, distortion and residual stresses, segregations Welding Metallurgy presentation of the welding processes Macrography presentation of a welded joint melted zone, bond zone , HAZ, processing melted zone, behavior of elements in the fuse zone; hydrogen in welding; slag’s functions, solidification structures; blowholes and cracks in the melted area, thermal cycle and thermal repartition, sensitization.Weldability.Non-destructive testing: Liquid penetrant inspection UNI EN 1289:2006; Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Control UNI EN 10228-3:2000; Magnetic controls UNI EN 1330-7:2005 UNI EN ISO 9934-1:2004; Eddy current controls UNI EN 12084:2004; X-Ray (radiograph and diffractometry).
Prerequisites
an adequate knowledge of mechanical metallurgy is recommended

Frequency
Attendance, optional, takes place according to the classrooms and times established by the Presidency. Attendance, although strongly encouraged, does not contribute to the final evaluation
Exam mode
The assessment is based on the results of an oral interview, aimed at verifying the acquisition: To obtain the highest marks (30/30 cum laude) the student must demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered in the course, and that he can apply this knowledge to the solution of problems in the field of industrial engineering, proposing original solutions and demonstrating that they have deepened the study of the subject individually and with personal contributions.
