Course objectives

Students must acquire in-depth knowledge of the main authors and the most significant issues of modern Italian literature; they must be able to understand, analyze and interpret literary texts in prose and verse; they must be able to formulate a critical judgment in an informed manner and be able to communicate the results of their study in a clear and coherent way to an audience of specialists and non-specialists; finally, they must achieve an autonomous study method.

Course program
The course aims to provide students with the tools for textual analysis and critical reading of literary texts, with particular reference to the forms, genres and themes of 19th-20th century Italian literature. To this end, the works of Luigi Pirandello will be examined. The course is divided into two parts: 1) the first part (42 hours) will be devoted to the examination of general concepts and the 19th-20th cultural-historical context (week 1); to the introduction of the main authors (week 2); to the analysis and commentary of Piradello's Fu Mattia Pascal and Umorismo (weeks 3-6); 2) the second part (42 hours) will be devoted to Pirandello's plays and short stories (weeks 7-9); to the novel Quaderni di Serafino Gubbio operatore (weeks 10-12).

Exam mode
The exam consists in a written paper with questions on the author and the texts included in the reading list. In case of necessity (e.g.: certified learning difficulty or non-native speakers), oral exams can be agreed. More specifically, the exam consists of four open-ended questions (on individual texts and thematic issues) and lasts two hours. The assessment takes into account the following criteria: -relevance, accuracy and completeness of answers; -ability to articulate a clear, coherent and well-organised argument; -understanding and critical reworking of issues and thematic nodes; -lexical and syntactic mastery. Marks will be distributed as follows: - 18 to 21/30: sufficient or more than sufficient relevance and completeness of answers; sufficient or more than sufficient clarity, coherence and organisation of discourse; sufficient or more than sufficient comprehension and reworking; sufficient or more than sufficient linguistic mastery; - 21 to 24/30: fair relevance and completeness of answers; fair clarity, coherence and organisation of discourse; fair comprehension and reworking; fair linguistic mastery; - 25 to 27/30: good relevance and completeness of answers; good clarity, coherence and organisation of discourse; good comprehension and reworking; good linguistic mastery; - from 28 to 30/30: more than good or excellent relevance and completeness of answers; more than good or excellent clarity, coherence and organisation of discourse; more than good or excellent comprehension and reworking; more than good or excellent linguistic mastery; - 30 with ‘lode’: excellent relevance and completeness of answers.

Lesson mode
The course will be held in presence. Lectures (explanation of the historical and cultural framework, analysis and commentary of the works on the syllabus) will alternate with moments of synthesis and discussion in which students will be involved
