Translation theory

Course objectives

A) Knowledge and understanding: the student will know the main theoretical aspects of translation and interpretation, the semiotic transformations from the prototext to the metatext (i.e. the translation process), the elaborate taxonomies that provide for various types of translation and interpretation, from endolinguistics, to interlinguistics, to intersemiotics. B) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired in the science of translation in the choice and implementation of translation and interpretation techniques, doing thant in different contexts and through different communication channels, adapting to the needs that the situation requires . C) Autonomy of judgment: the student will be able to make careful and motivated decisions about the most appropriate translation and interpretation methods according to the different situations; D) Communication skills: the student will be able to explain and motivate the main aspects related to his/her interpretative choices and will be able to argue the main implications and / or critical issues from an application perspective; E) Learning skills: the student will learn to use the tools necessary to go deeper into the methodological aspects of translation, using audiovisual materials and video recording archives, to independently search for materials on which to practice.

Course program
The course aims to provide the basis for the development of multilingual translation awareness by illustrating and discussing the following topics with students: language and its properties for the translation process; the bilingual brain and the mental processes of translating; history of translation in the West and the East; basic concepts of translation theory (fidelity, equivalence, adequacy); from textual analysis to translation strategies; issues of intercultural pragmatics; texts and contexts for interpreting; from training to the world of work: issues of translation ethics and deontology.
Prerequisites
Basic concepts of linguistics and the description of spoken and sign languages.

Lesson mode
IN PRESENCE: for explanations and instructions on the activities to be carried out, frontal teaching will be used, accompanied by the use of Power Points. In addition, thanks to the possibility of showing images, slides, book pages and other graphic and audiovisual supports (also using web links), interactive type activities with pair and group work are also planned. DISTANCE: lessons will be synchronous. For both modes, the lesson contents will also be uploaded in the classroom (power point). Downloadable materials in pdf format will also be provided on the platform.
