Ethnolinguistics of the Italian Deaf Community
Course objectives
A) Knowledge and understanding: the student must demonstrate an adequate knowledge of the ethnolinguistic and anthropological aspects of the community that uses LIS in Italy. B) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: the student will be able to apply the knowledge acquired in the field of anthropology for a better understanding of the dynamics and interdependent relationships existing between sign language and the community that uses it; this knowledge will help the student in the delicate task of interpreter and cultural mediator. C) Autonomy of judgment: using his/her ethno-anthropological knowledge, the student will be able to choose how to relate in the most correct way with the deaf person, according to the different situations that could arise; D) Communication skills: the student will be able to explain and communicate the ethnolinguistic aspects related to the profession of the interpreter and will be able to discuss the from the anthropological point of view the main implication of his/her role in relation to the deaf community; E) Learning skills: the student will have the necessary tools to deepen the antropological aspects and to keep up to date on the most recent research.
