ENGLISH LANGUAGE I

Course objectives

First year Courses are devised to lay the foundations of linguistic learning in a three-year University syllabus. Students are offered general courses on the main principles of Linguistics applied to the English language. In particular, students will be trained to the linguistic and stylistic analysis of various text-types literary and non literary (narrative, dramatic, political, news discourse, etc.). The Linguistics course will be complemented by a one-year lettorato course, whose aim is to revise, systematize and develop the notions and skills acquired at High School.

Political Linguistics: The Voice of the Leaders. The course will provide a grounding in the main aspects of pragmatics and political linguistics, and will familiarise students with rhetorical, textual and linguistic analysis of those features to be found in political speeches. It will also examine how language is used by contemporary politicians and how it is part of the wider process of political discourse and political communication.
