Since the middle of the 20th century, Cavafy's poetry in Italy has met with a number of excellent translators, each of whom tried to integrate it into the Italian language, sometimes even with poetic values, making at the same time linguistic, interpretive and publishing choices which determined the presence of the Alexandrian poet in Italy. Reasonably, one could argue that the Italian 21st century in its birth has a profound and mature knowledge of Cavafy’s work. Considering this rich tradition, the course attempts to describe, analyze and understand the presence of Cavafy’s work during the past two decades, and this understanding will be achieved through the presentation and the critical study of the material in terms of translation, literature, culture and publishing. The subject of study and analysis during the courses will be a variety of texts such as translations, scientific articles, essays, newspaper articles dealing with or referring to Cavafy’s poetry, as well as original Italian literary works that have been published in recent years. At the same time, we will try to outline the main features of Cavafy’s presence in Italy over the last twenty years, but we will also identify the main factors that contributed to its formation. Particular attention will be paid to those characteristics that differentiate the 21st century from previous decades, in order to highlight the way in which Cavafy is presented today in Italy.
