Course program
The series of lectures, entitled "Plurilingualism in Contemporary Europe," provides the basics of language teaching in the current context. This year, the focus will be on the social and political implications of language education. The course offers an exploratory approach, exploring both theoretical aspects and practical teaching implications, focusing on the concept of intercultural communicative competence as a key skill for citizenship. The first part of the course explores the concept of intercultural communicative competence, developed to account for native language acquisition and then applied to foreign language teaching. Several key aspects are examined: how and why this concept has come to be thematically explored in modern and contemporary history, especially in the twentieth century; how the concept is instrumental in the plurilingual model that is now at the heart of national and European documents; and how the concept has been expanded in the twenty-first century to educate about differences and develop active citizenship policies. The second part of the course will explore the educational implications of democratic language education, aimed at making learners active participants in the social, cultural, and political life of increasingly dynamic and "liquid" communities. In particular, we will analyze: how the plurilingual model is developed in the CEFR; some of the main foreign language teaching methodologies.
