Course objectives

Learning the main features of history and structure of Croatian and Serbian. Developing the four basic language skills (intermediate level). Improvement of the linguistic, stylistic and cultural knowledge through translation from Croatian and Serbian into Italian. Comprehension and proper use of the basic technical terminology of translation; knowledge of the main elements of the history of translation and of theoretical reflection on translation; knowledge and proper use of the main kinds of dictionary

Course program
1) Introduction to morphology, syntax and lexicon of South Slavic languages; relationships between Croatian and Serbian morphosyntax and vocabulary. 2) Studying contemporary language through the four basic skills (mother tongue language expert exercises – lettorato – are integral part of the activities of this course). 3) Introduction to the main concepts and the technical terminology of translation, and to history and typology of dictionaries. Reading, translating and commenting selected passages from literary works.

To pass the South Slavic Languages II (Lingue slave meridionali II) exam
