ARABIC LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION I

Course objectives

The course is designed for initiate non-Arabic-speaking students into the study of standard Arabic, the course aims at enabling students to use and correctly pronounce simple Arabic sentences, and to comprehend and produce basic oral and written tasks. The course combines a theoretical and a practical side: on the one hand the student will learn basic notions of grammar and syntax of the classical Arabic language and on the other had these theoretical competences will be integrated by some practical exercises - readings and dialogues - with a mother tongue teacher.

Course program
Grammatical arguments: 1. writing (pronunciation, reading); 2. name (feminine, adjectives, pronouns); determination and indeterminacy; case system; number (dual and plural); 3. the construction of the nominal and verbal sentence; 4. particles and prepositions; 5. idafa and related constructions; 6. regular verbs (conjugation and negation) and some derivative forms; 7. roots and use of the dictionary. Conversion topics: 1. Greetings; 2. Self-representation and basic questions; 3. Description of an activity in the present; study and work activities; hobbies and free time; 4. Arab countries; 5. Description of objects and environment around us; 6. Description of activities in the past, in the present and in the future. This course teaches students the Arabic alphabet and the basics of MSA. The course focuses on the developing of the reading, writing and listening skills as well as the acquisition of a basic vocabulary in the main topics listed above. A detailed program of the explained topics will be provided at the end of the lessons.
Prerequisites
The course is intended for beginners (it starts with the alphabet) and no previous knowledge of the Arabic is required.

Class attendance is highly recommended
Exam mode
The exam includes a written test and following oral one. To access the oral exam it is required to pass the written exam. Exercises are planned during the lessons. The final written test consists of vocalization and understanding of an Arabic text, exercises on the various grammatical topics explained. The oral exam aims at verify the quality of language learning through reading, translation and an interview in standard Arabic on the topics explained during the course. Languages of the exams: Arabic and Italian. The assessment will be based on verifying the achievement of the educational objectives set by the course, on metalinguistic skills (awareness of the morphological and syntactic structures of the language), on the correct use of the vocabulary, grammatical structures and on the communication skills acquired by the student in the four linguistic competences .
