Particular attention will be paid to the institutional revival of 1868, the process of modernization, and in the period between the two world wars to the democratic opening of the 1920s and the authoritarian involution of the 1930s. Some historiographic issues will be briefly addressed, like the troubled application of European historiographic categories to the case of Japan.
