JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND TRANSLATION II

Course objectives

Educational Goals The three-year course aims at the Japanese Language acquisition in the written and oral component and the development of communication skills from the elementary to the advanced level, with different degrees for each year. Although a framework of reference as for the European languages has not yet been definited for the Japanese language, the JF Standard proposed by the Japan Foundation, based on the European CEFR, is in use; this scheme refers to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) with the N1-N2-N3-N4-N5 levels that are used in the following descriptions. At the end of second year the student will be able to use intermediate level structures of grammar and knowledge of ideograms. The lessons introduce the writing and syntax, with many hours dedicated to the development of communication skills, to the systematization and fixing of the concepts learned through classroom exercises and translation tests, according to updated language teaching techniques. Classes with native speakers further support the writing and conversation exercise. Specific Goals At the end of the second year the student is able to express, orally and through written productions, experiences, events, as well as explain in a simple way their opinions and ambitions; he will then be able to obtain the N4 of the JLPT.

Course program
Acquisition of upper-elementary and intermediate sentence patterns and characters, which will be learned through the reading and comprehension of different types of texts. Practice with both Italian and native speaker Japanese instructors.
Prerequisites
Having completed the first year of Japanese Language and Translation.

Teaching mode
Teaching will take place in class, unless changing in regulations by the university.
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory, although it is highly recommended in order to effectively achieve the expected outcomes.
Exam mode
A written test, which is a prerequisite for the oral exam, is composed of a grammar and comprehension section, as well as a translation. The grammar part of the written test includes: exercises related to the recognition and writing of kanji; exercises in which sentences are completed with the appropriate particles; multiple-choice exercises to test knowledge of grammatical structures; reading comprehension; and a short composition using the studied structures. The translation part consists of a passage of approximately 400 characters to be translated from Japanese into Italian, to verify comprehension and the ability to render grammatical structures in Italian. Both parts must be passed with a minimum passing grade. The oral exam is composed of: 1) an oral presentation on one of the previously established topics (role play cards), 2) a short dialogue on one of the previously established topics (role play cards), 3) reading a passage from the textbook readings and answering three questions about the text read. For the role play cards, refer to the teachers' Classroom. The final evaluation takes place during the oral exam. Final test score: 30/30.

Lesson mode
The lessons are lecture-based and delivered by three instructors: Romagnoli, Ichinose, and Ishihara. For optimal preparation, students are required to attend the lessons of all instructors.
